Chapter 5 - The Master of the HouseDaniel stepped forward, standing beside me, his arm wrapping protectively around my waist. The tension that had held his shoulders tight for months had vanished.

"I tried to warn you, Vanessa," Daniel said quietly. "I told you to leave us alone. I told you that Elena wasn't someone you could bully. But your obsession with our marriage blinded you."
"Daniel, please!" Vanessa sobbed, looking around the crowd for anyone to defend her. But her wealthy friends, her political allies, and even her personal attorney had stepped back, turning their faces away to avoid the camera lenses. "I did it for us! She doesn't belong in our world! She’s... she’s dangerous!"
"She is dangerous," Chief Sterling agreed, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "But only to criminals like you."
Detective Ramirez stepped forward, presenting a red-sealed warrant. "Vanessa Vale, you are under arrest for federal money laundering, bank fraud, and the criminal harassment of a retired police officer."
The two uniformed officers who had accompanied Chief Sterling stepped forward, their metal handcuffs clicking loudly as they secured Vanessa's wrists behind her back. Her immaculate cream silk dress was rumpled, her blonde hair falling in messy strands over her face as they led her away through the silent, staring crowd.
As the police car's red and blue lights began to flash outside the glass pavilion, Chief Sterling turned back to me.

"You did good, Elena," he said softly. "Your father would have been incredibly proud."
"Thank you, Chief," I said, a tear finally breaking free and running down my cheek. "It’s good to have the ledger balanced."
