Chapter 2 - The Two-Million-Dollar TrapVanessa gestured to the massive digital screen behind her, and two of her personal assistants rolled out a heavy projection setup. With a click of a button, a series of bank statements appeared on the screen, showing massive, suspicious transfers from Vale Holdings to obscure, offshore shell charities.

And there, highlighted in bright red, was my name, digitally and clumsily inserted beside several transaction numbers.
"Tonight," Vanessa announced proudly, her voice booming over the beach club's sound system, "my charitable foundation is announcing that we have uncovered systematic theft and embezzlement by Elena Cross. Daniel, I truly hope your prenuptial agreement is strong. Because your new wife has been draining your accounts to fund her past associates."
The crowd erupted into frantic whispers. Guests raised their phones, recording the unfolding drama, ready to post the scandal online.
Daniel took a step toward me, but I stopped him with a single, sharp look. He knew what I was capable of, but he also knew the depth of Vanessa’s hatred. Since the day we married, Vanessa had sent a relentless barrage of threatening messages, desperate to claw her way back into Daniel's wealth and prestige.
Vanessa expected me to break. She expected me to flee barefoot across the white sand while the cameras followed my humiliation. She didn't know that I had recognized the forged routing numbers on those bank drafts two weeks ago. She didn't know that the bartender closest to her stage was an undercover detective from the financial crimes division.
And she certainly didn't know that Daniel had finally given me full access to his archived messaging logs, exposing every blackmail attempt she had ever made.
I looked toward the eastern entrance of the beach club. Through the palm trees, I saw a uniformed security officer quietly lock the heavy iron gates. Beyond the gate, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb.
Right on time.
I turned back to face Vanessa. "You spent two million dollars on this party tonight, Vanessa."
"Yes, I did," she said, raising her champagne glass. "And it was worth every penny to expose you."
"That was incredibly generous of you," I said, a slow, quiet smile finally touching my lips.

Her brow tightened, her confident smirk faltering. "Generous?"
"Yes," I replied. "Because you managed to gather every single one of your wealthy co-conspirators in one room. And you put your financial crimes on a public screen."
