Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the LedgersThe silence that fell over the beach club was suffocating.

Vanessa’s champagne glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the stone floor, the sparkling liquid splashing over her designer heels. "Lieutenant?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "What... what do you mean, Lieutenant?"
Chief Sterling lowered his salute, his eyes turning to glare at Vanessa with a cold, terrifying intensity. "Six years ago, Elena Cross was the lead undercover detective for our organized crime unit. She spent eighteen months infiltrating the most dangerous financial syndicate in this state."
The crowd gasped. The phones that had been raised to record my humiliation were now capturing Vanessa's face turning a pale, sickly green.
"She was shot in the line of duty," Chief Sterling continued, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "While shielding her partner from a cartel hit. That scar on her ribs isn't a 'street-fight souvenir,' Ms. Vale. It is the Purple Heart of this department. She saved lives, and she put the men who shot her behind bars."
I looked at Vanessa, whose hands were now shaking violently. "And while I was recovering in the hospital, Vanessa, your family’s foundation was busy laundering the cartel's money through those very same offshore shell charities you just put on that screen."

"That's a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the edge of the pool. "We are philanthropists! We have nothing to do with those accounts!"
"The bartender who has been serving your guests tonight," I said, pointing to the man in the white apron who had just stepped out from behind the bar, holding a folder of printouts, "is Detective Ramirez. He spent the last two weeks tracking the digital signatures on the transfers you accused me of making. Every single one of them was authorized using your private IP address, Vanessa. From your computer, in your beach house."
