THE ASHES OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - Unmasking Grant’s Conspiracies“Continuity, Grant?” I asked, my voice ringing clear and strong across the cavernous boardroom, carrying none of the frail weakness my son-in-law had expected. “I wasn't aware that corporate continuity involved looting company accounts, forging property deeds, and committing arson to cover up financial discrepancies.”

Gasps erupted around the boardroom table. Several long-standing board members sat forward, staring in absolute shock at my sudden, healthy appearance.

Grant scrambled backward against the projection screen, his voice cracking hysterically. “Arthur! You... you’re supposed to be—the doctors said you were incapacitated! This is a hostile intrusion! Security, remove this man!”

Not a single security guard moved. Instead, one of the federal compliance officers stepped forward, flashing a gold shield and unrolling an arrest warrant. “Grant Vance, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, forgery of securities, and federal tax evasion relating to Sterling Industries and subsidiary shell entities.”

Jonathan Reed stepped up to the head of the table, opening his briefcase and distributing certified forensic audit reports to every astonished board member. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Jonathan announced calmly, “over the past sixty days, my firm has uncovered a systematic scheme orchestrated by Mr. Vance to siphon over three million dollars in company capital into overseas accounts, funded partly by fraudulent insurance claims filed following the suspicious arson fire at Mr. Sterling’s private residence.”

Grant’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the mahogany table to steady himself, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit doors, only to find them blocked by building security. His grand empire of lies, built on smoke and ash, had finally collapsed around him in broad daylight.
