Chapter 2 - Through the Smoke and FireThe

Chapter 2 - Through the Smoke and FireThe air in the hallway turned into liquid fire, searing my lungs with every ragged breath. I could hear the sirens wailing in the distance, a faint, metallic hope cutting through the roaring monster that had once been my home. The beam pressing down upon my left leg felt like an anchor dragging me toward the dark, quiet abyss. My vision tunneled, the edges blurring into a thick, suffocating blackness. I thought of Ruth, wondering if this was how she felt when her heart finally gave out three years ago. Was I joining her now, betrayed by the very daughter we had raised with every ounce of our souls?

Just as the darkness threatened to claim me completely, a heavy, rhythmic thumping echoed from the floor below, followed by boots pounding against the charred stairs. A voice bellowed through a breathing apparatus, authoritative and steady. “Fire department! Is anyone up here!” I tried to scream, but my throat was raw, capable of producing only a dry, pathetic rasp. I scraped my fingernails against the scarred wooden floorboards, sending a faint vibration through the wood.

A helmeted figure materialized through the thick, churning wall of black smoke, sweeping a heavy halligan bar across the corridor. It was Captain Marcus Vance of the County Fire Rescue—a man I had known since he was a boy playing Little League with the neighborhood kids. He spotted me pinned beneath the smoking timber, his eyes widening behind his protective visor. “Hold on, Arthur! I’ve got you!” Marcus roared, dropping to his knees right beside the blistering heat. He wedged the crowbar beneath the fallen support beam, throwing his entire muscular frame into the leverage point. Muscles strained beneath his turnout gear as the heavy timber groaned, shifted upward by a precious few inches, and rolled aside.

Marcus didn't waste a second. He hoisted my limp body over his broad shoulder in a flawless fireman’s carry, shielding my face from falling embers as he bolted back toward the burning stairwell. As we descended into the chaos of the ground floor, the front window frame blew outward in a shower of sparks and shattered glass. Through the smoke, I caught a brief, sickening glimpse of Vanessa and Grant rushing past the fire engines. Vanessa cradled her pampered poodle, Baxter, safely against her chest, while Grant struggled under the weight of my heavy office safe, which he had somehow managed to haul out of the study. They didn't look back to see if I was alive. They only looked at what they had managed to salvage. Then, the heavy smoke closed over my eyes once more, and I slipped entirely out of consciousness.

The ceiling tiles above me were smooth and unbroken—a stark, comforting contrast to the collapsing roof beams of my ruined home. I tried to move my left leg, and a sharp, dull ache radiated from beneath thick layers of gauze and a protective orthopedic cast.

Chapter 5 - A Stranger at the BedsideTwo days after Vanessa and Grant’s performance, during visiting hours when my supposed loving family was conveniently absent, a quiet knock rapped against my hospital room door. A man in his late forties stepped inside, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal suit, a trench coat slung over one arm, and carrying a worn leather briefcase. He had piercing blue eyes, silver-streaked hair, and an air of quiet, unshakeable competence.

Chapter 7 - The Inheritance HuntWhile Grant and Vanessa plotted my imminent financial submission, I spent my evenings reviewing the structural blueprints of my former company, Sterling Industries, which Grant had slowly maneuvered himself into managing as vice president of operations. Under his brief tenure, employee morale had plummeted, safety regulations had been quietly bypassed to cut overhead costs, and several lucrative government contracts had been flagged for quality discrepancies.
Chapter 8 - Entering the Corporate Lion’s DenTwo months after the fire, Jonathan Reed and I decided it was time to drop the mask. We orchestrated a grand return to Sterling Industries for its annual shareholder meeting, which Grant had smugly scheduled to coincide with a vote to approve an emergency corporate restructuring plan—a plan that would quietly transfer fifty-one percent of company voting shares into a shell corporation controlled entirely by Grant.
