THE ASHES OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Legal Siege BeginsThe arrest of Grant Vance sent shockwaves through the local business community and made front-page news across the state. Headlines blared: “Sterling Industries Heist Uncovered: Executive Arrested for Fraud and Arson.”

Vanessa arrived at my downtown residential suite later that evening, frantic, disheveled, and weeping hysterically. She threw herself onto the floor at my feet, clutching the knees of my trousers. “Dad! You have to help him! They took Grant away in handcuffs! They’re saying he set the fire! You know that’s not true, right? You know Grant would never hurt you!”

I looked down at my daughter, feeling a profound, aching sadness rather than anger. The poison had taken deep root, but the source of the infection was standing right there in front of me.

“Vanessa,” I said quietly, reaching down to gently remove her hands from my trousers. “Grant forged my signature. He tried to steal my company. He left me to burn alive beneath a fallen beam while he hauled an office safe out of my house. And you stood at the top of the stairs and watched him do it.”

Her jaw dropped, her tears stopping instantly as the full, terrifying realization hit her: I knew everything. I had seen her hesitation, her calculation, and her betrayal.

“I didn't... I didn't want you to die,” she whispered, her voice cracking into a pathetic whimper.

“No, Vanessa,” I replied, my voice steady as stone. “You just didn't care if I lived. There is a very big difference. Pack your things. The house on Maple Street is being rebuilt under Ruth’s irrevocable trust, and your name is permanently removed from every asset bearing the Sterling name. You chose your husband’s greed over your family. Now you get to live with the consequences.”
