THE ASHES OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - Facing the Flames in CourtThe federal criminal trial of Grant Vance lasted three intense weeks in the United States District Court. The prosecution presented an airtight case, featuring testimony from corporate whistleblowers, forensic accountants, and fire marshals who conclusively proved that the Maple Street fire was initiated using accelerants purchased on Grant’s personal credit card three days prior to the incident.

I took the witness stand on the second day of the trial. Walking slowly across the courtroom with my ebony cane, I climbed the steps to the witness box, took the oath, and looked directly across the room at Grant. He sat at the defense table in a standard orange jumpsuit, looking hollow, defeated, and utterly terrified.

When the prosecutor asked me to recount the events of the night of the fire, I spoke clearly and calmly, detailing how Grant had prioritized hauling out a safe filled with stolen corporate documents over ensuring human life, and how Vanessa had physically shoved me into the path of danger.

When Grant’s defense attorney attempted to cross-examine me by suggesting my memory was impaired by smoke inhalation, I looked the lawyer dead in the eye and said, “A man does not easily forget the face of his own daughter watching him burn to death. Memory is remarkably clear when forged in fire.”

The courtroom fell into a profound, suffocating silence.
