The Ash Protocol / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Legal GuillotineThe King County District Court was packed to maximum capacity for the federal trial of The United States v. Vanessa Cole and Judith Vance.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, my hand resting calmly on my leather briefcase, my posture perfect and serene. Beside me sat Elena, her presence a constant, reassuring shield.

Across the aisle sat Vanessa and her mother, both wearing plain, dark jail jumpsuits, their hands bound in steel chains. Vanessa looked thin, disheveled, and completely abandoned by the high-society friends who had once chased her for invitations.

The federal prosecutor stood before the jury, displaying the digital ledger and the security camera footage from the winter salon on the massive screens. The sounds of Vanessa’s cruel laughter and Elena’s desperate, sobbing pleas filled the silent courtroom, making several jurors visibly flinch with disgust.

“These defendants did not just commit financial fraud, ladies and gentlemen of the jury,” the prosecutor said, pointing a finger directly at Vanessa. “They used their position of power to systematically exploit, abuse, and silence a young woman. When she tried to defend her dignity, they struck her with a weapon, telling her she was nothing.”

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

“We, the jury, find the defendants, Vanessa Cole and Judith Vance, guilty on all counts of grand larceny, money laundering, conspiracy, and felony domestic assault,” the foreperson announced, her voice ringing clear through the silent courtroom.

The judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp, resounding crack that echoed through the chamber.

“Vanessa Cole, you are sentenced to twenty years in a federal penitentiary with no possibility of parole. Judith Vance, you are sentenced to twelve years.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away in chains, Vanessa turned to glare at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, wild hatred. But I didn't flinch. I stood up, buttoned my jacket, and walked out of the courtroom beside Elena, leaving the dark shadow of their tyranny behind forever.
