Chapter 4 - The Forensic AuditThe offices of Miriam Cole were a quiet sanctuary of glass and polished mahogany, overlooking the grey, rainy Manhattan skyline. I sat at the long conference table, reviewing the final compliance filings for Halcyon Holdings.

“We’ve managed to freeze all of Vanessa’s private trust accounts, Adrian,” Miriam said, sliding a spreadsheet across the table. “Her legal team tried to file an emergency motion to release the funds, claiming she was being denied constitutional access to representation, but the federal judge threw the motion out within ten minutes.”
“Did they find the connection to Marcus?” I asked.
“Yes,” Miriam nodded, a sharp smile touching her lips. “Marcus has already agreed to a plea deal. He’s currently giving a full, recorded deposition to the district attorney, detailing exactly how Vanessa coerced him into setting up the Delaware shell companies.”
“He’s giving her up to save his own skin,” I murmured, taking a sip of my tea.
“Of course he is,” Miriam said. “When the ship starts to sink, the rats are always the first to swim. But we’ve also uncovered something far more dangerous, Adrian. Vanessa wasn't just siphoning money to fund her personal shopping habits. She was using the siphoned capital to purchase commercial properties in upstate New York—properties registered under a dummy trust that lists her mother, Judith, as the sole beneficiary.”
I felt a cold prickle of anger run down my spine, but I kept my breathing slow and controlled. “So the mother was the silent partner.”

“Exactly,” Miriam said. “Judith has been using her high-society connections to funnel dirty money into Vanessa’s charity, where Vanessa would launder it through the Delaware shells and return it to Judith’s properties as 'legitimate' commercial investments. It's a textbook, multi-million-dollar laundering scheme.”
“They thought they were playing with a quiet, patient husband,” I said, standing up and walking to the window. “They thought my silence was stupidity. But they forgot that before I ran Halcyon Holdings, I spent ten years as a forensic auditor for the state. I know exactly how to trace the blood in the ledger.”
