The Ash Protocol / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Shadows of the SocialiteThe public downfall of Vanessa Cole was a massive, viral storm that consumed the local news. The high-society friends who had once lined up to attend her charity galas were suddenly deleting their social media accounts, trying to erase any connection to her name.

I stood in the lobby of the federal courthouse, my hands in my pockets, watching the reporters crowd around the defense table as Vanessa was escorted in for her formal arraignment.

She wore a simple, un-pressed jail jumpsuit, her long blonde hair looking messy, her face pale and drawn under the fluorescent lights. She looked twenty years older, her manicured nails chipped from scratching at the concrete walls of her cell.

As she spotted me sitting in the front row of the gallery, her eyes flared with a desperate, wild anger.

“Adrian!” she screamed, trying to lunge toward the partition before a guard firmly grabbed her arm. “You can't do this to me! I made you! I gave you the social status you needed to run that company! You’re nothing without me!”

“The only thing you gave me, Vanessa,” I said, my voice carrying easily over the whispers of the courtroom, “was a front-row seat to your own destruction.”

Her defense attorney stepped forward, trying to mount a weak, desperate argument. “Your Honor, my client is a prominent member of the community. She is a dedicated philanthropist who has raised millions of dollars for local families. These charges are a malicious fabric of a bitter husband who is trying to avoid a massive divorce settlement.”

“The prosecution has the original, unedited digital ledger, Your Honor,” the federal prosecutor said, standing up and displaying a thick leather folder. “We have the bank transfers, the forged digital signatures, and the direct testimony of her co-conspirator, Marcus. This was not a philanthropic endeavor; it was a criminal enterprise.”

The judge looked down over his bench, his expression completely devoid of mercy. “Motion for bail is denied. The defendant represents a severe flight risk and a danger to the integrity of the financial system. She will remain in federal custody until the trial date.”

As Vanessa was led out through the heavy steel doors, her hysterical screams echoing down the corridor, I turned to Miriam and smiled. The cage was finally locked, and the key was firmly in our hands.
