The Ash Protocol / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - Stripped of the CrownThe news of the scandal hit the financial blogs and high-society columns of New York by Monday morning. The Fall of the Coles: Socialite Vanessa Cole Arrested for Grand Larceny and Servant Abuse.

I sat in the quiet, sunlit study of the mansion, my hands wrapped around a warm cup of coffee. Across from me sat Elena, wearing a soft, clean cream sweater, her face looking rested for the first time in years. The bruises on her shoulders were still yellowing, but her eyes held a new, quiet strength.

“Mr. Adrian,” Elena said softly, her hands resting in her lap. “I don't know how to thank you. If you hadn't come home early... I don't think I would have survived another week in this house.”

“You don't have to thank me, Elena,” I said, pushing a leather folder across the mahogany desk toward her. “You are the one who had the courage to stay. And you are the one who is going to help me clean up this house.”

Elena’s brow furrowed as she opened the folder. Inside were the deed transfer documents for the mansion we were sitting in, along with a certified bank statement showing a private trust account containing two million dollars.

“What is this?” she whispered, her eyes widening in disbelief.

“It’s your eviction notice for Vanessa, and your title to this house,” I said. “Under the terms of the pre-nuptial agreement Vanessa signed six years ago, any act of moral turpitude or criminal behavior nullifies her claim to any joint marital assets. The mansion, the accounts, and Halcyon Holdings are entirely mine. And I am transferring the deed of this residence to you.”

“But... but I am just the housekeeper, sir,” Elena stammered, a tear of pure relief running down her cheek. “I cannot own a place like this. What will people say?”

“People will say that justice was served, Elena,” I said, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand. “This house was built on the labor of people who were treated as invisible. I want you to turn it into a sanctuary—a place where women who have survived domestic abuse and exploitation can find a safe haven. You will be the director of the foundation.”

“And Vanessa?”

“Vanessa is currently sitting in a federal detention center, waiting for her bail hearing,” I said, my voice dropping into a hard, cold register. “Her family has already refused to post the bond. They know that if they touch her, the federal investigators will audit their accounts next. She is completely alone.”
