Chapter 3 - The Ledger Behind the PanelThe cathedral exploded into horror and screams.

Four hundred high-society guests—politicians, CEOs, judges, and journalists—sat frozen in utter shock as I stood in the center aisle wearing only my white lace undergarments.

My body was a canvas of violence.

Deep, purple-black bruises covered my shoulders, my ribs, my waist, and my thighs. Fresh finger marks were imprinted around my throat. Dark, yellowing welts from his leather belt lined my back.

The silence that followed was terrifying, heavy, and absolute.

Cameras from the wedding media team were still rolling, broadcasting the live feed to the screens set up around the cathedral overflow rooms.

“Oh my God...” a woman in the third row sobbed, covering her mouth.

Adrian’s face drained of every drop of color. He took an involuntary step back, staring at my exposed skin as if he were looking at a ghost.

“Evelyn... what... what are you doing?” Adrian stammered, his voice cracking. “She’s insane! She’s having a psychotic episode! She did that to herself!”

“Did I do this to myself, Adrian?” I asked, my voice calm, clear, and resonant, carrying easily through the high vaulted ceilings of the church.

I reached down into the pile of silk dress on the floor, pulled out an encrypted flash drive I had sewn into the inner lining of the train, and handed it directly to Special Agent Marcus from the Justice Department.

“On this drive,” I announced to the room, “you will find eleven months of date-stamped medical records, high-resolution photographic evidence, and audio files of Adrian Vale detailing every assault.”

“You crazy bitch!” Adrian roared, lunging toward me.

Before his hands could touch me, the two state detectives surged forward, slamming Adrian face-first onto the altar steps. The metallic click-clack of steel handcuffs echoed loudly off the stained-glass windows.

“Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for felony domestic assault, false imprisonment, and aggravated battery,” Detective Miller announced, cranking the cuffs tightly down around his wrists.

Celeste shrieked, stumbling forward. “Un-hand him! Do you know who we are?! We own Vale Meridian! My son is untouchable!”

“Not anymore, Mrs. Vale,” Victoria Vance, my attorney, stepped up to the altar steps, pulling an official court document from her briefcase. “Because Vale Meridian doesn't belong to your son. It never did.”
