Chapter 2 - The Ghost at the DoorAt the altar, the priest reached the traditional pause in the liturgy. “If anyone here knows any reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony, speak now, or forever hold your peace.”

The cathedral was silent. No one spoke.

Adrian’s grip on my hand tightened, his nails digging into my skin. “Good girl,” he murmured under his breath.

I didn't answer him. Instead, I unclasped my hand from his, took a step backward, and looked toward the heavy oak doors at the back of the church.

Right on cue, the double doors burst open, letting in the bright afternoon sunlight and a cold gust of wind.

My lawyer, Victoria Vance, entered first, wearing a sharp black suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

Behind her came two state detectives, a senior special agent from the Department of Justice, and a woman in her late thirties wearing a plain trench coat—a woman Adrian had spent ten years pretending was dead.

A gasp rippled through the front rows. Celeste stood up so fast her pearl necklace caught on her collar.

“What is the meaning of this intrusion?!” Celeste bellowed, her regal composure shattering instantly. “Security! Escort these people out!”

The security guards Adrian had hired for the venue didn't move. They couldn't—my team had already replaced them with federal marshals an hour before the ceremony.

Adrian turned around, his handsome face twisting in confusion and sudden rage. “Evelyn, what did you do?”

I didn't answer him with words.

Instead, I reached up, unzipped the back of my forty-thousand-dollar Vera Wang wedding gown, and let the heavy silk drop to the marble floor.
