Chapter 20 - THE BABY WHO CHANGED THE FAMILY

|

Dominic Russo disappeared before sunrise.

His room was empty, his phone had been abandoned, and the security footage showed him leaving the estate shortly after midnight. A car registered to a shell company was found near the harbor, but there was no sign of him.

Rocco ordered a full search.

For the first time in his life, he could not be certain whether the man who had served him for twenty years was a loyal protector or the architect of his family's suffering.

The evidence was sent to federal investigators. Victor Sterling was arrested at a private airport while attempting to leave the country. Valentina agreed to cooperate, providing financial records and testimony about the falsified adoption scheme.

The legal consequences would take months, perhaps years, to unfold.

But the children were finally safe.

Gabriel began rebuilding his relationship with Nora. Their first conversations were awkward, filled with questions neither knew how to answer. He did not immediately forgive the years they had lost, but he returned to Maine every weekend.

Elena and Sophia remained at the Moretti mansion while investigators secured their apartment building. Rocco offered Elena a permanent position overseeing the household's charitable foundation, but she refused to become another person dependent on his money.

“I'll stay until Sophia feels safe,” she said. “After that, we'll decide what we want.”

Rocco respected her answer.

He also began changing the mansion. The security system was placed under independent supervision. Every employee received access to an anonymous reporting channel. The family foundation's accounts were audited, and the hospital records were handed to investigators.

It was not redemption.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

Three months after Sophia found Leo in the trash, the mansion held a small gathering in the garden. There were no reporters, no politicians, and no powerful guests pretending to care about the family's reputation.

Only a few trusted friends, the children, and the people who had helped uncover the truth.

Gabriel held Leo carefully while Sophia showed the baby a tiny stuffed lion.

“See?” she whispered. “I told you he was brave.”

Rocco stood nearby, watching them.

Gabriel approached him after a while.

“I don't know what to call you,” he admitted.

“You don't have to call me anything.”

“You're my father.”

“Yes.”

“I need time.”

“You can have all the time you need.”

Gabriel looked down at Leo.

“Are you going to keep him?”

“If his mother cannot be found, I'll make sure he has a safe home. If she returns, we'll help her rebuild her life.”

Gabriel nodded.

“That sounds fair.”

Across the garden, Elena approached Rocco.

“Sophia wants to know if she can keep the little lion she gave Leo.”

“Of course.”

“She also wants to know if she can visit whenever she wants.”

Rocco looked toward the little girl.

“Tell her the doors are open.”

Elena smiled.

For the first time, the mansion felt less like a fortress and more like a home.

That evening, Rocco sat beside Leo's crib. The baby slept peacefully, his tiny hand resting against the blanket Sophia had wrapped around him on the night everything changed.

Rocco had once believed control could protect the people he loved.

Now he understood that control without truth only created better-hidden cages.

He reached into his pocket and removed the old hospital bracelet.

The engraved number had been the first clue, the first lie, and the beginning of the family's collapse.

He placed it inside a small wooden box.

Then he heard footsteps.

Sophia stood at the nursery door, holding a sealed envelope.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Rocco turned.

“What's that?”

“I found it inside the stuffed rabbit you gave me.”

He took the envelope.

There was no return address, only a handwritten message.

FOR THE CHILD WHO WAS LEFT BEHIND.

Rocco opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph of a woman standing outside St. Helena Private Hospital. She held a newborn in her arms, and her face was unmistakable.

Isabella Hart.

Beneath the photograph was a short letter.

Rocco, if this reaches you, then you have protected the wrong child for the right reason. Leo is safe now, but he is not the only child I left behind.

Rocco's fingers tightened around the paper.

The letter continued.

There is another boy. He carries your father's name, and he knows what happened to Dominic Russo. Do not search for him until you understand why your father ordered the original records destroyed.

At the bottom, Isabella had written one final sentence.

Ask Valentina what happened on the night your father died.

Rocco looked up at Sophia.

“Where did you find this?”

“Inside the rabbit's stomach. There was a little pocket sewn into the lining.”

He stared at the envelope again.

Valentina had claimed she knew nothing about Isabella's survival. She had claimed that Victor was responsible for everything. She had claimed that the Moretti family had been manipulated from the outside.

But now there was a new question.

What had really happened on the night his father died?

Rocco walked to the window.

Outside, Gabriel was carrying Leo while Elena and Sophia laughed beneath the garden lights. For a moment, he considered leaving the letter unopened, allowing his family one peaceful evening.

Then his phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

You found the baby. You found Gabriel. You found the truth about Victor.

A second message followed.

But you still haven't found me.

Rocco stared at the screen.

A photograph arrived.

It showed Dominic Russo standing beside a teenage boy outside an unfamiliar mansion. The boy had dark hair, gray-green eyes, and the same small crescent-shaped mark beneath his left eye that Sophia carried.

Beneath the photograph were four words.

YOUR FATHER'S OTHER SON.

Rocco slowly lowered the phone.

The family he had fought to save was not yet whole.

And somewhere beyond Chicago, another Moretti child was waiting to decide whether he would come home as a son—or return as an enemy.
