Chapter 15 - THE GIRL WITH THE MORETTI EYES

|
Rocco read the letter three times before showing it to Elena.
The handwriting belonged to Grace. The message described a child she had been unable to protect, a family secret that could not be spoken aloud, and a promise that the truth would one day reach the next generation.
But the most disturbing line referred to Sophia.
If the little girl with the Moretti eyes ever comes into your life, keep her away from Victor Sterling.
Elena looked toward her daughter, who was sitting on the living room floor playing with Leo.
“Sophia has my eyes,” she whispered.
“Not entirely,” Rocco replied.
He had noticed it before. The unusual gray-green color, the slight upward tilt, and a small crescent-shaped mark near the left iris.
The same features appeared in the old photograph of his father holding the girl named Grace.
Rocco requested a confidential DNA comparison between Sophia, Elena, and the archived family samples.
Elena agreed only after he promised that Sophia would not be frightened or forced to undergo anything unnecessary.
The results arrived four days later.
Sophia was not Rocco's daughter.
But she was biologically related to the Moretti family through a previously undocumented branch.
The laboratory could not identify the exact relationship without additional samples, but the probability of a close connection was overwhelming.
Rocco looked at the report.
“Your mother was connected to my father.”
Elena nodded slowly.
“Then Sophia is part of your family?”
“Possibly. But we need to know how.”
He returned to the archive and found a second document mentioning Grace. It described a child born during a secret relationship between a Moretti relative and a woman whose name had been erased from the record.
The child had been placed with another family after a custody dispute.
The record ended abruptly.
A note in the margin read:
Do not confuse the child who was hidden with the child who was lost.
Rocco felt a chill.
Two children.
One hidden.
One lost.
And now Sophia, an eight-year-old girl who had rescued a baby from the trash, stood at the center of the mystery.
That evening, Rocco sat beside her in the nursery.
“Do you know anything about your grandmother's family?”
Sophia shook her head.
“Mommy says she died when she was little.”
“Did she leave you anything?”
Sophia thought for a moment.
“A song.”
“What song?”
Sophia began humming a gentle melody.
Rocco froze.
He recognized it.
His father used to hum the same melody when he was alone in his study. Rocco had not heard it since childhood.
“Where did you learn that?”
“Mommy sings it when she's sad.”
Rocco closed his eyes.
The melody was the only thing his father had ever admitted remembering from the woman he had loved before marrying Rocco's mother.
The next morning, Eleanor Voss confirmed the missing detail.
Grace had been the daughter of Rocco's father's first love. She had disappeared during the same period that Victor Sterling began manipulating hospital records.
If Sophia descended from Grace's hidden branch, then the child had been connected to the Moretti family long before her mother ever accepted a job at the mansion.
Rocco looked at Dominic.
“Victor didn't place Elena here by accident.”
Dominic nodded.
“He may have been watching her for years.”
“Why?”
“Because Sophia inherited something he couldn't control.”
Rocco looked toward the nursery, where Sophia was helping the baby hold a soft toy.
He had thought the child was simply brave.

Now he wondered whether someone had spent eight years waiting for her to reveal a secret.
And if Victor knew the truth, Sophia might be in far greater danger than anyone realized.
