Chapter 16 - THE SECOND ENVELOPE

|
The second envelope had been mentioned in three separate pieces of evidence, but nobody had found it.
Sophia had heard the woman at the service gate refer to it. Claire Donovan had used the same phrase during her interrogation. Eleanor Voss remembered an instruction warning that it must never reach Victor Sterling.
Rocco believed the envelope contained the original records linking every child in the scheme.
Dominic searched the Bellmont warehouse again. This time, he found a concealed compartment beneath a metal desk.
Inside was an empty envelope marked with a silver bird.
The flap contained a faint impression of a handwritten note.
The original is with the person who has nothing to lose.
Rocco studied the words.
“Who has nothing to lose?”
Dominic considered the possibilities.
“Marissa Cole is in custody. Eleanor is frightened. Claire wants a deal. Dr. Reed has a career to protect.”
“Someone outside the operation.”
“Someone who has already been hurt by it.”
Rocco thought of Isabella Hart.
Then Elena.
Then Sophia.
That afternoon, Sophia asked whether she could visit the old chapel with her mother. She wanted to retrieve her stuffed rabbit, which had been left behind during the kidnapping.
Rocco refused at first.
Then he reconsidered.
The chapel was now under constant surveillance, and the request might help him understand why the kidnappers had chosen that location.
He accompanied them personally.
Inside, Sophia searched the pews while Elena waited near the entrance. Rocco inspected the broken windows and the old service tunnel.
Sophia suddenly called out.
“Mr. Moretti, look!”
She had found a small metal box hidden beneath the loose floorboard where she had been tied.
Inside lay a photograph of Isabella Hart holding a newborn, a folded train ticket, and a sealed envelope.
The envelope was addressed to Rocco.
He opened it carefully.
If you are reading this, then Victor has failed to erase the children.
The letter explained that Isabella had discovered a network of forged identities connecting hospital employees, private adoption agencies, and wealthy families who wanted heirs hidden from rivals.
She had copied the original records and planned to expose the operation.
But she had also learned something more dangerous.
Victor Sterling had not been acting alone.
A member of the Moretti family had supplied him with confidential information.
Someone who knew the mansion's security system.
Someone who knew where the baby would be found.
Someone who could access the locked archive.
The letter ended with a single name.
Dominic Russo.
Rocco looked up slowly.
Dominic stood at the chapel entrance.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Dominic raised both hands.
“I can explain.”
Rocco's voice was dangerously quiet.
“Start talking.”
Dominic looked at Sophia and Elena.
“Not here.”
“Now.”
Dominic swallowed.
“I helped Victor access the old hospital records. He told me the information would prevent an attack on the family. I didn't know he planned to abandon a child.”
“You knew about the twins.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Matteo might still be alive.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Rocco stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Because your father ordered me to protect a secret. He believed exposing it would destroy the family.”
Rocco stared at the man who had served him for twenty years.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Dominic's voice broke.
May you like
“Matteo is alive.”
And before Rocco could respond, a gunshot shattered the chapel window.
