Chapter 12 - THE FATHER-IN-LAW'S EMPIRE

|

Victor Sterling received Rocco in a private club overlooking Lake Michigan.

The older man was seventy-one, impeccably dressed, and surrounded by people who mistook wealth for innocence. He had financed hospitals, political campaigns, and charities bearing his name. In public, he was celebrated as a philanthropist.

In private, he had spent years manipulating the Moretti family.

“Rocco,” Victor said warmly. “I heard about the unfortunate incident at your mansion.”

“Then you know why I'm here.”

Victor gestured toward a chair.

“Sit down. Let us discuss this rationally.”

Rocco remained standing.

“Isabella Hart.”

Victor's smile faded.

“I don't know the woman.”

“You paid her employer. You altered hospital records. You transferred a newborn under a false identity.”

“Those are serious accusations.”

“I have the financial records.”

“Financial records can be manipulated.”

“I have witnesses.”

“Witnesses can be frightened.”

Rocco leaned forward.

“And I have a little girl who remembers the shoes your employee wore when she abandoned a baby in my trash.”

Victor's eyes sharpened.

“Children are unreliable.”

“Not when they're the only honest people in the room.”

For a moment, Victor's polished mask slipped.

Then he laughed softly.

“You believe you can destroy me because you found an abandoned child? You have no idea how many people owe me favors.”

“Then you won't mind if the evidence becomes public.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“You would destroy your own wife?”

Rocco's expression hardened.

“If she helped commit a crime, she will answer for it.”

Victor leaned back.

“Valentina was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“From the truth about your family.”

Rocco waited.

Victor continued.

“Your father built an empire by making enemies. When you were young, someone began targeting your heirs. Valentina discovered that a hospital employee had been selling information to outsiders. She arranged for certain records to be changed so your children would be harder to trace.”

“Why was Matteo declared dead?”

“Because the alternative was worse.”

“What alternative?”

Victor looked toward the window.

“Someone wanted the Moretti bloodline erased. Valentina believed a dead heir could not be kidnapped.”

Rocco felt anger rise through him.

“She buried a false identity and let me grieve a child who was alive?”

“She thought she was saving your family.”

“She destroyed it.”

Victor's voice hardened.

“Then perhaps you should ask why your own father never told you the truth about his enemies.”

Rocco went still.

“What does my father have to do with Isabella Hart?”

Victor stood.

“Everything.”

He opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Rocco's late father standing beside a woman outside St. Helena. The woman was young, with dark hair and a small scar beneath her left eye.

Rocco recognized the face from Isabella's hospital photograph.

But the date on the back was twelve years earlier.

Victor watched him carefully.

“Your father knew her long before you did.”

Rocco looked up.

“What are you hiding?”

Victor smiled sadly.

“The same thing your father hid from you.”

He leaned closer.

“Your family didn't begin with the Moretti empire. It began with a child someone stole.”

Rocco left the club with the photograph in his pocket.

He had come to confront a corrupt father-in-law.

And somewhere in his late father's private archive, there might be an answer.
