Chapter 6 - Tearing Down the LiesIn the weeks following the bail hearing, my life transformed into a whirlwind of legal action and total reclamation.

With Brandon, Evelyn, and Mara locked away in county jail facing a mountain of felony charges, Sarah Lin moved aggressively to freeze all joint bank accounts, revoke Brandon’s power of attorney, and file for an immediate, fault-based divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty and attempted murder.
We discovered that Brandon had drawn over four hundred thousand dollars from our joint credit lines to pay off personal gambling debts in Las Vegas—debts he had hidden behind his mother’s shell companies.
With the help of a court-appointed receiver, I reclaimed full, unencumbered access to my late father’s estate trust. The first thing I did with my reclaimed financial power was hire a private security firm to safeguard my home and purchase the deed to the suburban house on Oak Street where the horror had taken place.
Two weeks later, I stood in the backyard of that house.
The afternoon sun was warm, but the air smelled clean. A heavy yellow excavator truck sat parked in the driveway, its engine idling loudly.
Beside me stood Detective Cruz and Sarah Lin.
"Are you sure you want to be here for this, Hannah?" Cruz asked gently.
"I need to see it," I replied firmly, resting my hand over my round, healthy bump.
I signaled to the construction crew leader. The massive steel claw of the excavator surged forward, digging deep into the wet earth of the backyard—tearing up the mud pit, smashing the wooden porch where Evelyn and Mara had sat laughing, and scraping away every last trace of that horrific grave.
Where the mud pit had once been, the crew laid down fresh, rich black soil, planting a sprawling bed of white roses, lavender, and young oak trees.
"You're planting a garden?" Sarah asked, watching the workers smooth out the ground.
"I'm reclaiming the earth," I answered softly. "They tried to turn this dirt into my grave. I'm turning it into something that grows."
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was a call from the District Attorney’s office.
"Hannah," the prosecutor’s voice came through the speaker, filled with grim triumph. "Dr. Pendelton just signed a full prosecution plea agreement. He’s testifying against Brandon and Evelyn in exchange for a reduced sentence. And he gave us the physical journals where Evelyn mapped out the entire plan to poison your food over six months."

I closed my eyes, taking a deep, clean breath of spring air.
The net was closing. The lies were completely unraveled.
