SILENT SOIL, LETHAL TRUTH / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - Sirens in the SuburbsThe silence that fell over the backyard was deafening.

Brandon froze, his hand buried knee-deep in the mud beside my face, his fingers clutching the glowing freezer bag as if it were a venomous snake. His face drained of all color, shifting from arrogant control to raw, unadulterated panic in a fraction of a second.

Up on the porch, Evelyn dropped her teacup. It shattered against the wooden decking, splashing warm liquid over her shoes. Mara scrambled out of her lawn chair so fast it tipped over into the grass.

"Brandon!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice cracking. "What is that?! Who is that?!"

Before Brandon could answer or pull the phone from the ground, the sound of roaring engines shattered the peaceful quiet of the suburban cul-de-sac. Tires squealed against asphalt, followed by the heavy thud of multiple car doors slamming shut in the front yard.

"Brandon Sterling!" a stern, booming voice commanded through a bullhorn from the front driveway. "This is the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department! Put your hands on your head and step away from the back garden immediately!"

Brandon stumbled backward out of the mud, tripping over his own feet and falling onto his back in the grass. "No, no, no... this is a mistake! It's a family matter!" he yelled toward the side gate.

Four heavy-duty officers in tactical gear burst through the wooden side gate with drawn weapons, led by Deputy Sheriff Susan Vance.

When Deputy Vance rounded the corner of the house and saw my face emerging from a mound of fresh earth, surrounded by stagnant water and a plastic straw sticking out of my mouth, her professional composure cracked.

"Dear God in heaven," Vance breathed out, her eyes wide with horror.

"Get the mother and the sister on the ground now!" Vance ordered her officers, her gun trained directly on Brandon’s chest. "Step away from her, sir! Hands on your head! On the ground now!"

Evelyn began to scream, waving her arms hysterically. "You don't understand! She's crazy! She's mentally ill! She dug that hole herself!"

"Shut your mouth!" a deputy barked, tackling Brandon to the wet grass and forcing his arms behind his back with a sharp metallic snap of handcuffs. Another officer forced Mara and Evelyn against the porch railing, securing their wrists in heavy zip-ties.

Deputy Vance rushed over to the hole, dropping to her knees in the mud. She carefully cleared the heavy soil away from my neck and shoulders, pulling the plastic straw gently from my cracked lips.

"Hang in there, sweetie," Vance said, her hands working rapidly to unearth my chest. "Paramedics are right behind us. You're safe now."

I coughed weakly, my throat burning as fresh, clean oxygen flooded into my lungs. My voice was a hoarse, ragged rasp.

"The... the phone..." I whispered, pointing my trembling, muddy hand toward the freezer bag still resting in the dirt.

Deputy Vance picked up the bag, wiped the mud off the screen, and looked at the display. The voice recording app was still running, showing over thirty-six hours of continuous, time-stamped audio files saved to a cloud server.

Vance looked at Brandon, who was being dragged to his feet by two deputies, his face covered in dirt and grass.

"You're going away for a very long time, Mr. Sterling," Deputy Vance said coldly.
