Chapter 5 - The Bail HearingThe San Bernardino County Courthouse was packed with local news reporters and camera crews when the bail hearing for Brandon, Evelyn, and Mara Sterling commenced on Monday morning.

The story of the "Buried Pregnant Wife" had exploded across national news channels and social media platforms. Outraged protesters stood outside the courthouse steps holding signs that read #JusticeForHannah and #ProtectTheUnborn.
I sat in the front row of the courtroom, wearing a tasteful dark green maternity dress that gracefully accommodated my growing belly. Beside me sat Sarah Lin and Detective Cruz.
Across the aisle, at the defense table, sat Brandon, Evelyn, and Mara. All three were wearing orange county jail jumpsuits, their hands and ankles bound in heavy steel chains. Brandon looked hollow, his expensive haircut messy, his eyes darting frantically around the room as if searching for an escape. Evelyn looked older, her face lined with stress, while Mara wept quietly into her cuffed hands.
Judge Harold Thomas, a stern, grey-haired magistrate with a reputation for zero tolerance, slammed his gavel down to open the proceedings.
"Your Honor," Brandon’s lead defense attorney, Richard Vance, began, stepping up to the podium. "My clients are lifelong residents of this county with no prior criminal records. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount so Mr. Sterling can return to his business and support his family during this stressful period."
Judge Thomas glared over his reading glasses at the defense team. "Mr. Vance, your client is accused of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, felony child abuse, and multi-million-dollar financial fraud. He buried his pregnant wife up to her neck in a mud pit for thirty-six hours!"
"Your Honor!" Vance protested quickly. "There is context! My client was dealing with an extremely volatile domestic situation involving a spouse with documented psychiatric troubles—"
"Enough!" Judge Thomas barked, slamming his hand onto the bench.
Judge Thomas turned his attention to the prosecutor, who stepped forward and inserted a flash drive into the courtroom’s audio system.
The loud, clear recording echoed through the high-ceilinged courtroom:
“We do not care if the baby feels it, Hannah,” Evelyn’s recorded voice sneered through the speakers. “You’re going to stay in this dirt until you sign over the trust power of attorney. Brandon owns you.”
A collective gasp ripped through the audience in the gallery. Several jurors on the bench covered their mouths in disgust.
Brandon ducked his head, his shoulders shaking as he avoided looking at the judge.
Judge Thomas turned back to the defense table, his face dark with fury.
"Bail is denied for all three defendants," Judge Thomas declared coldly, slamming his gavel down with a sharp crack. "You will remain in county custody pending your criminal trial. Court is adjourned."
As the bailiffs dragged Brandon toward the holding cells, he looked back at me, his eyes wide with desperate pleading.

"Hannah! Please!" he sobbed out. "I love you! I was just doing what my mother told me! Please talk to me!"
I sat straight in my chair, holding my stomach, staring straight past him as if he were nothing more than a ghost.
