Chapter 6 - The Silent WitnessThe federal raid on the Sterling estate was swift, merciless, and broadcast live on every local news station. As Arthur, Evelyn, and Ethan were led away in handcuffs by federal marshals, I stood by my cruiser, watching the family empire collapse into dust.

In the image captured by news cameras that afternoon—a photo that would go viral across social media within hours—I stood in my dark detective jacket, my badge visible at my belt, watching calmly while Arthur Sterling covered his face in shame and Ethan screamed at the camera crew.

The public reaction was immediate and explosive. The story of a high-society lawyer abusing his innocent wife while his powerful family used federal loopholes to cover it up touched a nerve across the country.

By the next morning, Claire had regained consciousness.

I sat beside her hospital bed, holding her weak hand as she slowly looked around the room. The swelling in her face had started to go down, though the deep bruises were still stark against her pale skin.

"Mara..." she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Where is he?"

"He's in federal custody, Claire," I said gently, stroking her forehead. "Ethan, his father, his mother... all of them. They're never coming near you again."

Tears trickled down her bruised cheeks. "He... he made me sign papers, Mara. I didn't know what they were... he threatened to hurt you if I didn't sign..."

"I know, baby," I whispered. "I know everything. The feds found the forged documents. You're completely cleared. You didn't do anything wrong."

She closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to carry the weight of six months of horror. "I was so scared... I thought nobody would believe me. He told me everyone would take his side because he was a lawyer and I was just his wife."

"He was wrong," I said, leaning in close. "He forgot that you have a twin sister who hunts monsters for a living."

A small, faint smile touched Claire's lips—the first real smile I had seen on her face in over a year.

A quiet knock sounded at the door. Dr. Sarah Lin, the chief trauma surgeon, stepped into the room holding a clipboard.

"Detective Bennett," Dr. Lin said respectfully. "There is someone outside who needs to speak with you. He says it's regarding your sister's case."

I stood up, giving Claire's hand a squeeze. "I'll be right back."

In the hallway stood Assistant US Attorney David Vance—a sharp, uncompromising prosecutor known as 'The Hammer' in federal court. He wore a crisp dark suit and held a thick leather briefcase under his arm.

"Detective Bennett," Vance said, extending his hand. "I wanted to meet you in person. The evidence your team provided on Ethan Sterling's offshore accounts is the cleanest forensic paper trail I've seen in fifteen years."

"Will it hold up in court?" I asked directly.

Vance smiled, a cold, sharp expression. "Hold up? Detective, Ethan Sterling is facing thirty years for money laundering, wire fraud, and racketeering. But I want to make sure he pays for what he did to your sister."

He opened his briefcase, pulling out an official document stamped with the seal of the United States District Court.

"We are adding federal charges of kidnapping, deprivation of civil rights, and witness tampering," Vance said. "If your sister is strong enough to testify, I guarantee Ethan Sterling will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars."

I looked back through the glass window at Claire, who was watching us softly from her bed.

"She'll testify," I said with absolute certainty. "She's stronger than any of them realize."
