Chapter 5 - The In-Laws' BetrayalI arrived at Ethanâs parental estate in the wealthy enclave of Oak Ridge at eight in the morning. The house was a massive brick mansion surrounded by manicured lawns and iron gates.

As I walked up the stone driveway, I saw Ethanâs parentsâArthur and Evelyn Sterlingâstanding on the front veranda. Arthur was a retired appellate judge, a powerful man with silver hair and a ruthless reputation. Evelyn was a socialite who spent her days managing charity boards and ignoring her familyâs dark secrets.
Ethan stood between them, wearing a clean suit, a white bandage covering his broken nose. He held an ice pack to his face, laughing quietly as his father spoke to a lawyer on a cell phone.
They looked like a family enjoying Sunday brunch, completely untouched by the bloody horror left behind in Room 402 of St. Jude's Hospital.
As my boots crunched against the gravel, all three of them turned to look at me.
Ethanâs laugh died instantly. He took an involuntary step back behind his father.
"You," Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace. "How dare you come onto my property after what you did to my son!"
Arthur stepped forward, his posture rigid, his eyes burning with legal fury. "Detective Bennett. You have five seconds to turn around and leave before I have the State Police arrest you for trespassing, assault, and official misconduct."
I didn't stop walking until I reached the bottom step of the veranda, looking up at the three of them.
"I saw the medical report from the hospital, Arthur," I said, my voice steady and cold as ice. "Your son broke three of Claire's ribs. He ruptured her spleen. He left her bleeding on a floor for four hours while he called his lawyers."
Evelyn sneered, looking down her nose at me. "Claire is an unstable girl! She has been having manic episodes for months! Ethan has been patiently trying to care for her, and you broke into their home and brutally attacked him!"
"She's telling the truth, Mara," Arthur chimed in, his voice deep and practiced. "We have psychiatric records proving Claireâs instability. In fact, we are filing a petition with the probate court today to have Ethan appointed as her full legal guardian so she can be committed to a private facility for treatment."
They were going to lock her away in a psychiatric ward so she couldn't testify against him.
"You knew," I whispered, looking from Arthur to Evelyn. "You knew what he was doing to her. You helped him hide it."
"We protect our family, Detective," Arthur said without a shred of remorse. "Something a street cop like you clearly doesn't understand. Now get off my land before I ruin what little is left of your career."
I pulled out my phone, tapped the screen, and flipped it around so they could see the display.
On the screen was a live feed of the federal courthouse downtown, where teams of FBI agents were currently unloading boxes of seized files from the offices of Sterling & Vance.
Arthurâs eyes widened in horror. The color drained from his face as he recognized the seal of the Federal Organized Crime Strike Force on the boxes.
"What... what is that?" Arthur stammered.
"That's the forensic audit of your son's shell companies," I said calmly. "The ones he opened using my sister's forged name. And do you know what the feds found an hour ago, Arthur? They found your signature on the offshore trust transfers."
Evelyn let out a sharp gasp, looking at her husband in terror.
"You didn't just know about his abuse, Arthur," I continued, stepping up the first stair. "You were using his firm to launder your own illegal offshore funds from your time on the bench. You sacrificed my sister to protect your retirement."
Ethanâs ice pack slipped from his hand, crashing onto the stone floor. "Dad... what is she talking about?"
"Shut up, Ethan!" Arthur roared, his hands trembling violently as he stared at me. "You're bluffing! You don't have access to those files!"
May you like
"I don't need access," I smiled, a dark, cold expression. "I gave them to the US Attorney two hours ago. The arrest warrants were signed ten minutes ago. I just came by to see the look on your faces before the federal marshals arrive."
Right on cue, the heavy roar of blacked-out SUVs echoed down the quiet suburban street, turning into the long driveway with their red and blue lights flashing silently against the morning mist.
