Chapter 3 - Unmasking the MonsterThe emergency room at St. Judeâs Hospital smelled of bleach and copper. I stood outside Room 402, my arms crossed over my chest, watching through the glass window as the medical team worked on Claire.

The preliminary medical report was a horror story written in red ink: three fractured ribs, a severe concussion, a ruptured spleen, and extensive soft-tissue trauma across her entire body. The doctor told me that if I had arrived twenty minutes later, internal bleeding would have taken her life.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was Captain Harris, my commanding officer at the 4th Precinct.
I answered on the first ring. "Captain."
"Mara," Harrisâs deep, weathered voice came through the line. "Where are you?"
"Hospital. With Claire."
A long pause echoed over the phone. "I just got a call from District Attorney Vance. Ethan Sterlingâs law partners are already at the precinct. Theyâre claiming you broke into his home without a warrant, assaulted him, and fabricated a domestic dispute to settle a personal grudge."
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "I have pictures of my sister's broken body, Captain. I have the shattered phone. I have the blood on his cuffs."
"I know, Mara," Harris said softly, his voice softening with genuine concern. "I saw the intake photos. What he did to her is horrific. But Ethan Sterling isn't just a lawyer; heâs the chief legal counsel for the Mayorâs reelection campaign. He has powerful friends, and they are already moving to shut this down before the morning news cycles hit."
"Let them try," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous register. "If anyone tries to drop these charges, I will release the bodycam footage from the arresting officers directly to the press."
"Listen to me carefully, Mara," Harris warned. "Internal Affairs has already been notified because youâre related to the victim. You are officially off this case. You cannot be in the interrogation room. You cannot access the evidence locker. If you touch this investigation, Sterlingâs defense team will use it to throw the entire case out of court on conflict-of-interest grounds."
I looked through the glass at Claire, who was lying motionless under a white blanket, an IV drip hooked into her arm.
"Understood, Captain," I said calmly. "I won't touch the official investigation."
I hung up the phone. I didn't need the official investigation. I had my own resources.
I pulled out my second phoneâa secure, encrypted device I used for private intelligence workâand dialed a number I hadn't called in three years.
The line rang twice before a smooth, deep voice answered. "Detective Bennett. I assumed you were retired from private requests."
"I need a favor, Marcus," I said, stepping into the quiet stairwell. "I need a complete forensic dive on Ethan Sterling. Not just his bank accounts. I want his private servers, his travel logs, his offshore accounts, and every non-disclosure agreement his firm has drafted in the last five years."
"Ethan Sterling?" Marcus paused. "The defense attorney?"

"He put my twin sister in the ICU tonight," I said, my hands tightening around the steel railing until my knuckles turned white. "I don't just want him in prison, Marcus. I want him erased."
"Give me two hours," Marcus replied. "I'll give you the keys to his kingdom."
