Chapter 10 - A New DawnOne year later.

The morning sun rose warmly over the city, casting golden light across the newly constructed glass building of the Claire Bennett Foundation.

Inside the bright, bustling lobby, dozens of women and children were receiving support—lawyers offering free consultations, social workers organizing temporary housing, and counselors leading group therapy sessions.

Claire stood at the center of it all, dressed in a sharp white blazer, holding a clipboard as she coordinated the morning staff meeting. She was radiant, healthy, and filled with a vibrant energy that inspired everyone around her. She had reclaimed her life, her name, and her purpose.

I stood by the front entrance, wearing my dark detective coat and my shiny new Senior Detective badge pinned to my belt.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was dispatch.

"Senior Detective Bennett," the dispatcher's voice came through. "We have an active domestic call on 5th Avenue. Victim managed to lock herself in the bathroom, requesting immediate police assistance."

"Copy that, dispatch," I said, stepping out into the crisp morning air. "Unit 4409 responding. I'm three minutes away."

Before I got into my cruiser, I turned back to look through the glass doors of the foundation. Claire caught my eye and blew me a kiss, raising her hand in a small, strong wave.

I smiled, got into my car, flipped on the lights and sirens, and pulled out into the city streets.

I spent years believing my job was just about catching criminals after the damage was done. But as the red and blue lights reflected off the buildings, I knew the truth.

My badge wasn't a leash. It was a shield. And as long as I was breathing, no monster in this city would ever get away with hurting the innocent again.
