Chapter 8 - THE HEIR THEY WANTED

|
The video changed the meaning of everything. Richard and Vanessa's father had discussed the Romano succession years before Clare met Alexander. They had wanted a child who could serve as a symbol of continuity while the adults quietly controlled the business. Vanessa's current campaign for power was not a sudden ambition. It was the latest stage of a plan designed to survive the people who created it.
Clare felt sick—not because anyone had planned for her daughter to inherit, but because they had spoken about a child as if she were a key to a locked cabinet.
“She isn't their heir,” Clare said. “She's a person.”
Alexander sat across from her in Evelyn's office. He looked as though he had not slept in days. “I know.”
“Do you? Because the trust you signed gives them a path to control her life.”
“I'll revoke it.”
“You'll try. They may fight you.”
“Then I'll fight them.”
Clare folded her hands over her belly. “I don't want our daughter raised in a house where every act of love is another kind of ownership.”
Alexander did not ask her to come home. Instead, he asked what she needed to feel safe. Clare named the things she had once thought too ordinary to demand: independent medical care, access to her own money, a security plan she could review, and a lawyer who answered only to her. She wanted a separate home for the baby, at least until the danger passed. She wanted Alexander to stop sending people to follow her without permission.
He agreed to every condition, then put the agreements in writing.
That afternoon, Vanessa appeared outside Evelyn's building. She wore a cream coat and carried no visible anger. She asked to speak to Clare alone.
Evelyn advised against it, but Clare agreed to a conversation in the office with the door open and Daniel in the adjoining room.
Vanessa sat down carefully. “I know you hate me.”
“I don't know you well enough to hate you.”
“You think I wanted Alexander.”
“Did you?”
Vanessa's gaze dropped. “I wanted what he represents. Security. A place no one could take away from me. My father taught me that affection is temporary and power is permanent.”
“That sounds lonely.”
Vanessa gave a brittle laugh. “You always had the luxury of being kind.”
Clare looked at her. “You don't know anything about what I've had to survive.”
For a moment, Vanessa seemed ready to argue. Then her face changed. She admitted that her father had used her as a messenger between Richard and Leonard. She had entered the clinic to retrieve old records connected to the trust, not to confirm a pregnancy. She had allowed Alexander to believe she knew more than she did because fear made her manipulative. She had never been pregnant with his child.
“Why let him say that in the hotel?” Clare asked.
“Because I wanted you to hear it. I wanted you to leave him before he could choose you over the family again.”
The cruelty of the confession was almost breathtaking.
“You used my baby to punish me.”
Vanessa's eyes filled, but Clare did not soften. “I'm not asking you to forgive me,” Vanessa whispered.
“Good. I'm asking you to tell the truth.”
Vanessa agreed to cooperate, but warned that Richard had a private ledger hidden in a storage unit outside the city. It contained the original records of the transfers and a list of everyone paid to keep quiet. She had a key, but she feared Richard knew she had it.
Daniel arranged a controlled retrieval with law enforcement. Before they could leave, Vanessa received a call. She listened, then went white.
“Richard knows,” she said. “He's taken my father.”
Her phone buzzed again. A video appeared: Vanessa's elderly father tied to a chair in a dark room. Richard stood behind him.
“Bring me the key,” Richard said on camera. “Or the old man dies.”
Vanessa rose so quickly that her chair struck the wall.
Clare caught her wrist. “If we run straight into his trap, he gets two victims instead of one.”
Vanessa stared at her, stunned that the woman she had tried to destroy was the one stopping her from walking into danger.
Clare turned to Daniel. “We need a plan that gets her father out and the ledger into evidence.”

Then Alexander's phone rang. Richard's voice came through the speaker.
“Bring Clare to me,” he said. “Or your daughter will be born into a war you cannot win.”
