Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF TRUST

|

Vanessa refused to name the person until Daniel arrived. She had spent years learning that a name could become a death sentence, and she would not put it into the air without protection. Clare did not press her. She offered tea, a blanket, and the kind of quiet that made it possible for someone frightened to keep speaking.

When Daniel arrived, Vanessa explained that Richard had maintained a private list of people who could be pressured, bribed, or blackmailed. The list was not stored digitally. Richard kept it in a locked cabinet at a private club he used for meetings with business partners. Vanessa had seen it once while delivering a document for her father.

“Why didn't you tell the authorities earlier?” Daniel asked.

“Because my father was on the list. Because I thought Richard would destroy us. Because I wanted power badly enough to tell myself I could control him.”

“You can't control a man like Richard,” Clare said.

Vanessa looked at her. “I know that now.”

Daniel arranged a warrant request and contacted the investigators already handling the case. Meanwhile, Alexander was summoned to a meeting with the remaining Romano captains. Clare wanted him to refuse, but he believed he needed to tell them face-to-face that he would not return to the old system.

“Take a lawyer,” she said.

“I will.”

“And don't go alone.”

“I won't.”

He paused at the door. “I know you don't owe me another chance.”

“No, I don't.”

“But I want you to know I'm not asking for one today. I'm trying to become a man who could deserve one someday.”

Clare felt the words reach a place she had tried to close. She did not answer with a promise. She only nodded, and Alexander left without demanding more.

At the meeting, three captains backed his decision to cooperate with investigators. Two refused. The oldest, Peter Sloane, accused Alexander of destroying the family to impress his wife.

“Your father would be ashamed,” Sloane said.

“My father was wrong about many things,” Alexander replied. “I won't use his memory as an excuse to keep being wrong.”

Sloane left with the two men who supported him. Daniel warned that they might try to protect the remaining criminal assets before the investigation reached them.

The warrant was approved that evening. Investigators entered the private club and found the locked cabinet. Inside lay the list, a second ledger, and a sealed envelope bearing Alexander's name. The envelope contained a photograph of a man meeting Richard outside a courthouse. The man's face was unmistakable: Judge Thomas Bell, who had presided over a case involving the Romano shipping company twelve years earlier.

The discovery threatened to widen the scandal beyond the family. But another name appeared repeatedly beside Bell's: Samuel Ortega. The old driver had been paid to stay silent, but the ledger showed he had also been used to carry messages between Richard and the judge.

Daniel visited Samuel in protective care. Samuel admitted that he had carried one envelope to Bell without knowing what it contained. When he later learned that it was evidence meant to influence a ruling, he tried to return it. Richard threatened his family, and Samuel fled.

“I've spent years telling myself I had no choice,” Samuel said. “Maybe I didn't have a safe choice. But I still made one.”

Daniel did not absolve him. He offered him a path to testify honestly and accept the consequences.

That night, Clare received a call from Alexander. He sounded strained.

“Someone leaked the list,” he said. “The names are circulating. People are panicking.”

“Are you safe?”

“For now.”

“Then come here.”

He hesitated. “I thought you wanted space.”

“I do. But I don't want you alone while the world falls apart.”

Alexander arrived after midnight. They sat at opposite ends of the couch, exhausted, and talked without pretending everything was repaired. For the first time in months, he told her the truth about his fear: he had been so determined never to appear weak that he had mistaken secrecy for strength.

Clare listened, but she did not promise forgiveness.

Before dawn, Daniel called with news that changed everything. Judge Bell had agreed to cooperate—and claimed he had a recording proving Richard did not act alone.

The final name on the recording was Alexander's own.
