Chapter 7 - THE UNCLE'S OFFER

|

Richard Romano returned to New York as if he had been invited to a family reunion. He arrived at the mansion in a tailored navy suit, carrying a box of pastries and wearing the same warm expression that had comforted Alexander at his father's funeral. The household staff greeted him with affection. Security opened the gates. For several minutes, the man who might have helped murder Vittorio was welcomed home.

Alexander watched from the study window and felt something inside him go cold.

“He knows we have the recording,” Daniel said. “If he came here anyway, he's either arrogant or offering a deal.”

“Richard has never been short on arrogance.”

Clare was staying at a discreet apartment Evelyn had arranged. She listened as Alexander described the scene, then said, “Don't meet him alone. And don't let him turn this into a test of loyalty.”

“I won't.”

“That's what you said about Leonard.”

The words stung because they were true. Alexander took them without defense.

He met Richard in the library with Daniel nearby and a recorder running. Richard poured himself a drink, looked around the room, and smiled.

“Your father would be proud of the man you've become.”

“Then why did you help Leonard destroy him?”

Richard's smile barely shifted. “That's a serious accusation.”

“We have the ledgers. We have Samuel. We have the recording.”

“Evidence can be edited. Witnesses can be frightened. Your father was under pressure. He made enemies.”

“Did you arrange the crash?”

Richard put down his glass. “I arranged for a problem to be solved. Leonard handled the details. I didn't know he would go that far.”

Alexander felt the urge to cross the room and put his hands around his uncle's throat. He kept his hands flat on the desk instead.

“You let me grieve beside you.”

“You needed guidance. The family needed stability. I gave you both.”

“You gave me a lie.”

Richard leaned forward. “And I can give you a future. Sign the trust amendment. Keep Vanessa close, let her take the public role, and let the old books stay buried. Your child will inherit a clean company. Clare can have whatever settlement she wants. Everyone wins.”

“Except the people you robbed.”

“People like Samuel? He took money to disappear. Don't pretend this is a fairy tale about good men and bad men.”

“No,” Alexander said. “It's about the choices we make after we discover what we've become.”

Richard's expression sharpened. “You sound like your wife. She has made you sentimental.”

“She has made me listen.”

Richard stood. “Then listen to this. If you expose me, the families that owe us favors will turn on you. Your father built this empire with compromises. You cannot lead it with a conscience.”

“Watch me.”

Richard left without finishing his drink.

Within an hour, the Romano organization began to fracture. Two captains demanded a private meeting. Another sent word that he would not support a public investigation. Someone leaked a story to a gossip site claiming Clare was unstable and had fled her husband because of pregnancy-related paranoia. The article included a photograph of her entering Evelyn's office.

Clare read it in silence. Then she closed the page.

“They're trying to make me look unreliable,” she said.

“I'm going to shut it down,” Alexander replied over the phone.

“No. You're going to tell the truth about the trust and let the facts stand. I won't be your secret to manage.”

He paused. “You're right.”

For the first time, he publicly confirmed that Clare had left the mansion by choice and that no one had the right to speak for her. He did not accuse her of being emotional, confused, or manipulated. He said he had failed her and would respect her decisions.

The statement enraged Richard. That night, Clare received a package containing a copy of her private medical schedule and a note written in Richard's hand.

Your daughter's future depends on your husband's silence.

Clare showed it to Evelyn. Her fear was real, but it no longer controlled her.

“Then we make sure he can't silence the truth,” she said.

Before dawn, Daniel discovered that the encrypted file on the memory card had finally opened. It contained a video recorded inside Richard's office, dated the week before Vittorio died.

In the footage, Richard sat across from Vanessa's father.

And Richard said, “When the baby is born, we will have a legitimate Romano heir we can control.”

The men were discussing a child who had not yet been conceived.

Clare stared at the screen, understanding that the scheme had been waiting for her family long before Vanessa entered Alexander's life.
