Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE ALEXANDER MADE

|

The accusation reached Alexander before the recording did. A prosecutor called to say that Judge Bell claimed Alexander had attended a meeting where Richard discussed the plan to silence Vittorio. The allegation was impossible to ignore, even though Alexander insisted he had never known about the crash.

Clare watched him read the notice. He looked less angry than stunned.

“Could you have been there without understanding what they were discussing?” she asked.

“I attended dozens of meetings with Richard when I was younger. I was kept outside the real conversations, but I was in the room.”

“Then we find out what the recording actually says.”

Alexander wanted to call the prosecutor and demand an immediate interview. Evelyn stopped him. “You do not improvise your defense because your pride is bruised. We review the evidence, we preserve every record, and we let your lawyer speak.”

For once, he followed the advice without argument.

The recording arrived through official channels that afternoon. Judge Bell's voice was clear. He described a meeting in which Richard and Leonard discussed Vittorio's discovery of the fraud. Alexander was present, but he had been told the conversation concerned a security threat. When Richard asked whether the problem could be contained, Alexander said, “Do whatever you have to do to keep my father safe.”

The recording ended there.

It was not proof that Alexander ordered a murder. It was proof that he had given dangerous men broad permission to act while refusing to ask what they meant. His words had not caused the crash by themselves, but his blind trust had helped create the conditions in which it happened.

Alexander listened twice. Then he removed his watch and placed it on the table.

“I said that,” he whispered.

“You didn't know they were planning to kill him,” Clare said.

“I didn't ask. I wanted to believe Richard would do the ugly work and spare me the details.”

“That was wrong.”

“Yes.”

He did not defend himself. That was new.

The prosecutor agreed to interview him under counsel. Alexander cooperated, handed over his old correspondence, and gave a sworn statement about the meeting. His decision damaged his legal position in the short term, but it also made clear that he would not lie to save his reputation.

The Romano captains were furious. One sent a message warning that Alexander had sacrificed the family to make himself look noble. Another quietly offered to help him move assets overseas before the authorities seized them. Alexander refused both. He ordered the legitimate business accounts separated from the disputed funds and instructed his attorneys to preserve records.

At Willow Lane, Clare began preparing for the baby's arrival. She assembled a crib, washed tiny clothes, and placed the ultrasound in a frame on the dresser. Some evenings she felt hopeful. Other evenings she wondered whether she was bringing her daughter into a world that would always demand something from her.

Alexander helped when invited. He painted the nursery in a soft cream color and stopped working when Clare said the smell was bothering her. He learned where she kept the prenatal vitamins and asked before touching her belly. The small gestures mattered more than dramatic declarations.

One night, while they folded baby blankets, Clare asked, “What happens if you lose everything?”

Alexander looked at the tiny blanket in his hands.

“Then I learn how to live without using power to make people stay.”

The answer was imperfect, but honest.

Later that week, Judge Bell was found dead in his home. The authorities had not yet ruled on the cause, but the timing frightened everyone involved. His recording had already been secured, yet another witness had vanished from the case.

Alexander received an envelope at his office. Inside was a single photograph of Clare leaving her prenatal appointment.

On the back, someone had written:

Your daughter has a due date. So does your empire.

Alexander called Daniel and the prosecutor immediately. He did not send men to retaliate. He did not hide the threat. He reported it, then went to Willow Lane and told Clare everything.

She held his gaze, frightened but steady.

“Then we stop pretending the danger will disappear if we keep it secret,” she said. “We face it together—or we don't face it at all.”
