Chapter 9 - The Ring

Three years after Claire died, Elliot called.
“We found the ring.”
I sat upright.
“What ring?”
“Claire’s wedding ring.”
I had assumed Claire left instructions to sell it.
She had not.
It had disappeared before the funeral.
Daniel once accused me of taking it.
Now police found it inside an evidence box from the warehouse.
Daniel had removed it from Claire’s hospital belongings after she died.
Why?
The answer came from an inscription.
Inside the band, beneath the date of their wedding, Claire had added something months before her death.
Three words.
I choose myself.
She had apparently planned to return the ring to Daniel.
She never got the chance.
I held it in my palm.
The diamond still glittered.
Beautiful things can carry terrible histories.
I took the ring to a jeweler.
Not to sell it.
I asked him to remove the stone.
The diamond was auctioned for charity.
The platinum band was melted.
From it, the jeweler created a small silver-colored pendant shaped like an open door.
I wore it to the fifth anniversary gala of the Stay Beside Me Fund.
Elliot noticed.
“That's the ring?”
“It was.”
“What does the door mean?”
I touched it.
“Leaving isn't failure.”
He smiled.
“Claire would like that.”
“I know.”
For once, saying her name did not break me.
It warmed me.
That was when I realized grief had changed shape.
It still lived inside me.
May you like
It always would.
But it no longer owned every room.
