Chapter 7 - What Claire Really Left Me

After the trial, everyone expected relief.
Instead, I collapsed.
For nearly a year, anger had been my fuel.
Then suddenly there was nowhere to direct it.
I stopped sleeping.
Stopped cooking.
Stopped answering calls.
One morning, Elliot arrived at my house carrying another envelope.
“I promised Claire I wouldn't give you this until everything legal was finished.”
I almost laughed.
“Does my daughter have any secrets left?”
“Apparently one.”
Inside was a letter.
Mom, if you’re reading this, Daniel has either been exposed or I badly misjudged everything. Knowing you, you haven't slept properly in months.
I laughed and cried at the same time.
Claire knew me.
The letter was not about Daniel.
It was about me.
She told me to sell her house.
Keep my own home.
Travel.
See Florence.
Learn to cook something complicated.
Date someone if I wanted.
Never date anyone if I didn't.
She told me not to make grief into a career.
Then came one final instruction.
Use the company to build something that would have mattered to both of us.
Claire had struggled quietly with medical debt among some of her employees’ families.
Even wealthy-looking people could be financially destroyed by long illnesses.
She wanted Mercer House Media’s philanthropic division transformed into a foundation providing emergency grants to families caring for critically ill spouses.
Not patients.
Caregivers.
People who slept in hospital chairs.
People who lost jobs.
People who became invisible while someone they loved was dying.
Claire called it The Stay Beside Me Fund.
I knew immediately why.
When she was little and sick, she used to reach from her bed and whisper:
“Stay beside me, Mom.”
So I built it.
The first year, we helped 117 families.
The second year, nearly 400.
One woman used the grant to keep her apartment while her husband underwent cancer treatment.
A father used another to stay home with his daughter during hospice.
A grandmother raising three children used hers to prevent foreclosure.
Claire’s death had been cruel.
But what followed did not have to be.
I finally understood the difference between making meaning from loss and pretending loss happened for a reason.

There was no reason Claire deserved what Daniel did.
But I could still choose what grew afterward.
