Chapter 3 - Claire’s Last Recording

Detective Vale arrived thirty minutes later.
Daniel had already left.
That did not surprise anyone.
What surprised me was that Vanessa called while the detective was still in Claire’s dressing room.
My phone showed her name because Claire had once insisted I save her number for “emergencies.”
I answered on speaker.
“Margaret?”
Her voice was softer than it had been at the funeral.
“I wanted to apologize.”
“For which part?”
Silence.
“Coming today was a mistake.”
“Only today?”
She exhaled.
“I know you hate me.”
“That requires energy I don't have.”
“I cared about Daniel.”
“Claire cared about him too.”
“She told you about us?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa paused.
Then came the question.
“Did she tell you when she found out?”
Detective Vale looked at me.
Interesting.
“No.”
“I see.”
“Why?”
“No reason.”
“Vanessa.”
Her breathing changed.
“Claire confronted me once.”
“When?”
“About two months ago.”
“What did she say?”
“She told me Daniel would eventually destroy me too.”
That sounded exactly like my daughter.
“What else?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“She asked whether I knew what he was doing with her medications.”
The room changed.
Marcus leaned closer to the phone.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa heard the unfamiliar male voice.
“Who is that?”
“Police.”
The line went dead.
Marcus immediately called dispatch.
Meanwhile, Elliot opened the third envelope.
Inside was a small flash drive.
We connected it to Claire’s laptop.
There were seventeen audio files.
The final recording had been made four days before she died.
Claire appeared on screen sitting in the same dressing room.
Thinner.
Pale.
But unmistakably herself.
“Mom,” she began.
I covered my mouth.
“I hope you never have to watch this.”
I started crying immediately.
She continued.
“If you do, it means I wasn't able to finish this myself.”
Claire explained everything.
Daniel’s affair.
The forged loans.
The strange medication changes.
Her suspicion that someone had been interfering with her treatment.
Then she told us something none of us expected.
“I don't think Vanessa understands what Daniel is doing.”
Detective Vale frowned.
Claire continued.
“I believe Daniel told her I was terminally ill long before that was true. He told her I had months to live. I found messages between them.”
Elliot opened the file folder.
There they were.
Daniel had told Vanessa that Claire’s doctors expected rapid decline.
That was false.
He had told Vanessa they could be together publicly “after nature takes its course.”
My stomach twisted.
Then Claire looked directly into the camera.
“There’s one more thing.”
She lifted a medication bottle.
“I marked the pills.”
Not visibly.
Claire had asked a pharmacist friend to place microscopic identifying marks on a new batch after she suspected her medication was being replaced.
“If anything happens to me, test these.”
Marcus stared at the screen.
“That changes everything.”
Then Claire said:
“Mom, don't let grief make you reckless. Daniel expects emotional women. Make him deal with evidence.”
Even dead, my daughter was protecting me.
The final sentence shattered me.
“I love you. And whatever happens, don't let my ending become yours.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke for almost a minute.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
Vanessa had been located.
She wanted an attorney.
And she wanted to talk.
At the station that evening, she told investigators Daniel had managed Claire’s medications during her final month because he claimed Claire was confused.
Vanessa also admitted something else.
Daniel had given her a key to Claire’s house.
“For what?”
Marcus asked.
Vanessa stared at the table.
“He said eventually it would be our house.”
My chest tightened.
“When did he give you the key?”
“Three months before Claire died.”
Vanessa began crying.
For the first time, I believed her tears.
Then she looked at me.
“I didn't know he was hurting her.”
I thought of the funeral.
“Looks like I won.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I was horrible to you.”
“Yes.”
“I thought Claire had spent years manipulating him.”
“Daniel told you that?”
“Yes.”
“He told everyone exactly what they needed to hear.”
Vanessa nodded.
Then she revealed the detail that turned the investigation.
One night, she had seen Daniel crush tablets into Claire’s evening tea.
He claimed they were doctor-approved supplements.
Vanessa thought nothing of it.
Until now.
“What tablets?” Marcus asked.
“I don't know.”
“Color?”
“White.”
“Shape?”
“Small. Round.”
The toxicology compound had been manufactured in precisely that form.
Daniel was no longer simply an unfaithful husband.
He was a suspect.
But when police went to find him that night, he had disappeared.
And twenty minutes later, my phone received another message.
This one came from Daniel.
Claire left you something she never understood. If you keep digging, you'll lose it too.
Attached was a photograph.
