Chapter 4 - The Night Daniel Came Back

Police placed an officer outside my house.
I still did not sleep.
At 2:13 a.m., I heard glass break downstairs.
The officer shouted.
Then another sound.
Running feet.
I locked my bedroom door and called 911.
Minutes later, police found a basement window smashed.
Nobody was inside.
But something was missing.
Claire’s original leather journal.
I had brought it home after the funeral.
Daniel knew about it.
The thief had ignored jewelry, cash, electronics, and silverware.
Only Claire’s journal disappeared.
That meant the journal contained something worth risking arrest for.
Fortunately, Claire had photographed every page.
Elliot had copies.
One entry stood out.
March 14 — D said the warehouse documents are none of my concern. Then why is my name on them?
Warehouse.
We searched her digital files.
Eventually, Elliot found a property record.
A storage warehouse near the South Branch of the Chicago River.
Owned by one of Daniel’s shell corporations.
Police obtained a warrant.
Inside were boxes of corporate documents, prescription bottles, prepaid phones, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash.
But the most important discovery was a laptop.
Encrypted.
Federal investigators eventually opened it.
It contained years of financial records.
Daniel had been laundering company money through fake consulting invoices.
Claire discovered part of it.
That appeared to be when Daniel began describing her as mentally unstable.
The same strategy again.
Discredit the woman before she speaks.
There were also searches in his browser history.
Interactions between Claire’s prescriptions.
Toxicity levels.
How long certain compounds remained detectable.
I refused to look at the details.
I didn't need to.
My daughter had been sleeping beside a man who was studying how her body worked.
That knowledge nearly destroyed me.
Then another twist came.
The life insurance policy.
Six months before Claire died, Daniel increased coverage from two million dollars to twenty-five million.
Claire’s signature appeared on the change authorization.
It was forged.
The beneficiary?
Daniel.
Backup beneficiary?
A corporation controlled jointly by Daniel and Vanessa.
Vanessa denied knowing anything about it.
Investigators believed her.
Daniel had used her name without telling her.
For the first time, I saw what Claire had meant.
Vanessa had been cruel.
Selfish.
Willing to sleep with a married man.
But Daniel had been using her too.
Three days later, Daniel was found in Milwaukee.
He had checked into a hotel under another name.
When police entered the room, he did not resist.
He simply asked one question.
“Did Margaret find the journal?”
The answer was yes.
He laughed.
“Then she still doesn't know.”
That sentence haunted me.
What didn't I know?
The answer arrived during Daniel’s first court appearance.
His attorney claimed Claire had another beneficiary.
A child.
The courtroom went silent.
I nearly stood.
Claire had no children.
At least none I knew about.
Then Elliot leaned toward me.
“I think I know.”
Years earlier, Claire had frozen embryos during fertility treatment.
Daniel wanted them destroyed after they stopped trying for children.
Claire refused.
The embryos legally belonged to Claire alone under a revised agreement.
Her will transferred decision-making authority to me.
Daniel knew.
And now he wanted control.
Not because he suddenly wanted children.
Because Claire’s trust contained a clause.
If a biological child of Claire were ever born, that child would eventually inherit the controlling portion of Mercer House Media.
Daniel had tried to control the company through Claire.
Now he wanted another path.
I looked across the courtroom.
Daniel met my eyes.
And smiled.
That was his mistake.
Because in that moment, I understood exactly what my daughter had meant when she wrote:
Don't let my ending become yours.
Daniel believed every woman in his life could be turned into property.
Claire.
Vanessa.
Me.
Even a child who did not exist.
May you like
He had not learned anything.
But I had.
