Chapter 7 - The Foundation of Truth

Julian Mercer was the Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Eco-Structures, the premier sustainable civil engineering firm in the Pacific Northwest, and our primary structural partner on the hospital project.
At thirty-five, Julian was tall, athletic, with kind hazel eyes, an easy smile, and a reputation for absolute integrity in an industry often plagued by shortcuts. He had lost his younger sister to medical neglect years earlier, which drove his passionate commitment to building life-saving healthcare infrastructure.

"The way you integrated natural light into the pediatric recovery rooms at Harbor Light is changing how hospitals are built across the country," Julian smiled. "You designed a place where people can actually heal."
"Architecture should be a sanctuary, Julian," I replied, a warm smile touching my lips. "Not a cage."
Julian looked into my eyes, his expression softening with deep respect.
"Would you let me take you to dinner tomorrow night, Elena? No blueprints. No engineering load tests. Just two friends enjoying the sunset over the sound."

I looked into his kind, honest face, feeling the last lingering walls around my heart gently dissolve.
"I would love that, Julian," I said.
