Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Damask

The chandelier above the twenty-seat mahogany dining table in Beverly Hills threw brilliant facets of light across fine crystal flutes, silver carving sets, and a golden roast lamb. Around me, twenty members of the Montgomery dynasty sat in tailored suits and silk evening dresses. For three hours, they had smiled, traded country-club gossip, and sipped Napa Cabernet.

Then came the demand.

My mother-in-law, Grace Montgomery, delicately placed her silver fork onto her plate, clasped her manicured hands, and smiled with faux maternal affection.

"Elena, darling," Grace announced smoothly. "Given my recent hip discomfort, Jackson and I have decided it’s best for me to take over your high-rise condominium in Minneapolis for the next two years. It's single-level, closer to my specialists, and frankly, you and Jackson should be focusing on building a proper family estate here in California. Naturally, you will also transfer twelve hundred dollars a month to handle my private maid service and utilities."

A suffocating silence settled over the room.

My condo was not marital property. It was a three-bedroom penthouse overlooking the Mississippi River that I had designed, financed, and purchased through seven brutal years as a senior partner at an architectural firm—four years before I ever met Jackson. Jackson, meanwhile, had blown through three separate commercial tech startups, relying entirely on my executive salary to cover his luxury car leases and personal debts.

I looked around the table. Jackson’s brother lowered his eyes; his cousins pretended to adjust their napkins; his father, Charles, stared into his wine.

I took a slow breath, smoothed down the front of my white silk cocktail dress, and looked Grace straight in the eye.

"No, Grace," I said calmly. "My condominium is not available. And I will not be funding your domestic staff."

Jackson shot out of his chair at the head of the table, his chair legs screeching violently against the hardwood. His face was flushed crimson, veins bulging along his neck.

"How dare you disrespect my mother at her own table, you selfish bitch?!" Jackson roared, his fists slamming onto the linen. "Everything you have belongs to this family!"

Before I could stand, Jackson grabbed a heavy porcelain serving platter laden with hot cream sauce and hurled it directly across the table.

The porcelain exploded against the left side of my temple and forehead with concussive, bone-jarring force.

Shards of ceramic and hot cream splattered across my hair, neck, and chest. Blood erupted from a jagged two-inch laceration above my eyebrow, pouring in thick, crimson rivulets down my face, soaking into the bodice of my white dress, and dripping onto Grace’s spotless tablecloth.

No one moved. No one offered a napkin. Charles looked away, while Grace calmly picked up her carving knife as if nothing had happened.

The physical pain was blinding, but the cold realization in my soul was sharper than any porcelain shard.

I slowly pulled a jagged ceramic piece from my curls, rose to my feet despite my shaking knees, and locked eyes with Jackson.

"You have no idea what I'm capable of," I whispered.

I reached into my handbag, pulled out my blood-spattered phone, and dialed 911 on speakerphone.

"Beverly Hills Emergency Dispatch," the operator answered.

"My name is Elena Vance," I spoke with icy, unwavering clarity. "I am at 1044 Alpine Drive. My husband, Jackson Montgomery, has just assaulted me with a deadly weapon in front of eighteen witnesses. I need police units and paramedics immediately."

Jackson’s arrogant sneer withered into absolute, panicked terror.
