Chapter 6 - The Rebuilt Horizon

With the Montgomery family permanently excised from my life, I took a four-month sabbatical to focus on my recovery and my true passion: high-end sustainable architectural design.

The physical scar on my temple healed into a faint, thin line that served as an unshakeable reminder of my own resilience.

I relocated my primary operations to Seattle, Washington, purchasing a magnificent, sun-drenched four-acre estate overlooking Puget Sound. The home was an architectural masterpiece of cedar, glass, and local stone, surrounded by towering evergreens and blooming rhododendrons.

I founded Vance Architectural Innovations, focusing exclusively on designing state-of-the-art emergency pediatric medical centers and sustainable residential sanctuaries for women recovering from domestic trauma.

Within eighteen months, our firm won the National AIA Architecture Award for our design of the Harbor Light Medical Center in downtown Seattle.

At the national award gala held at the Seattle Art Museum, I stood on the terrace overlooking the illuminated harbor, wearing an elegant navy silk gown, holding a glass of sparkling water.

"It is an extraordinary design, Elena," a deep, warm voice spoke from behind me.

I turned around.

Standing there was Julian Mercer.
