Chapter 6 - The War at the GatesThe storm broke three nights later.

A heavy, torrential downpour blanketed the Hudson Valley, thunder rolling across the dark hills like distant artillery.
Inside the Westchester estate, the security lights flickered as the main power grid was suddenly severed from the outside perimeter.
Instantly, red emergency backup lights illuminated the long stone corridors.
I stood near the fireplace in the master study, my heart hammering against my ribs, holding a small brass letter opener in my good hand. Outside the heavy bulletproof glass windows, dark shapes moved through the rain-soaked gardens.
The doors to the study opened smoothly, and Vincent stepped inside, wearing a dark tactical vest over his black shirt, holding a heavy automatic pistol.
"They've breached the outer gate," Vincent reported calmly, his voice completely devoid of panic. "Sokolov sent twelve men."
"Vincent... please be careful," I choked out, stepping toward him, my hand gripping his sleeve.
Vincent looked down at me, his dark eyes softening instantly. He reached up, his thumb gently caressing my cheek, leaving a faint streak of warmth on my skin.
"Stay inside this room, Lena," he commanded gently. "The door is reinforced titanium steel. Once I lock it from the outside, no bullet can pierce it."
"Promise me you'll come back," I begged, tears brimming in my eyes.
Vincent smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that filled my chest with a strange, fierce warmth.
"I always keep my promises to you," he whispered.
He stepped out into the corridor, and the heavy titanium door slid shut with a pneumatic seal, locking me inside the safe sanctuary.
For twenty agonizing minutes, the muffled sounds of gunfire, breaking glass, and shouting echoed through the thick walls of the estate. I paced the floor, clutching my arm, praying with every breath for the safety of the man who had pulled me out of the dark.
Suddenly, the firing stopped.
A heavy, suffocating silence reclaimed the mansion.
Five minutes passed. Then ten.
My heart pounded so hard I could barely breathe. I approached the titanium door, pressing my ear against the cold metal.
Click.
The pneumatic lock disengaged, and the heavy door slowly slid open.
Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain, his tactical vest scuffed with soot, holding his side where a dark crimson stain was seeping through his shirt, was Vincent.
Behind him, Marco and four armed guards stood holding three captured men in chains.
Vincent looked at me, a tired, triumphant expression on his face.
May you like
"The threat has been eliminated, Lena," Vincent rasped, his knees suddenly buckling beneath him.
I screamed, surging forward to catch his massive frame as he collapsed onto the stone floor.
