Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the PastTwo weeks passed at the Westchester estate.

Under the continuous care of private physical therapists and nutritionists, my body began the slow, miraculous process of healing. The color returned to my cheeks, my weight stabilized, and the deep, dark bruises across my ribs faded into faint amber shadows.
During those two weeks, I learned that Vincent Moretti was not the ruthless monster the tabloids painted him to be.
He was a man of intense discipline, fierce loyalty, and quiet intellect. Every morning, he had breakfast with me on the sunlit terrace before managing his vast shipping and real estate empire. He listened to me speak about my childhood, my love for art, and my dreams of opening a small bakery in the countryside.
For the first time in my life, a man looked at me not as a possession to control, but as a human being worth protecting.
However, the peace was shattered on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
I was sitting in the estate's vast library, reading a book, when the heavy oak doors slid open.
Vincent walked into the room, accompanied by his chief lieutenant, Marco—a tall, stern man with a scar running down his cheek. Both men carried an air of heavy tension that instantly set my heart racing.
"Vincent...?" I asked, setting my book down on the mahogany table. "What's wrong?"
Vincent gestured for Marco to stay by the door, then walked over to the table, pulling a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase.
"Lena," Vincent began, his tone serious and measured. "When my legal team processed Marcus's financial records to liquidate his bank accounts, we discovered something concerning."
He opened the folder, laying several official documents in front of me.
"Marcus didn't just accumulate gambling debts at illegal casinos," Vincent revealed. "Six months ago, he took out a three-million-dollar accidental death life insurance policy on you."
My breath caught in my throat. "Insurance...?"
"And two weeks ago—three days before you called me—he pledged that policy as collateral to a rival syndicate operating out of Brooklyn," Vincent continued, his jaw tightening. "A syndicate led by a man named Victor Sokolov."
I stared at the documents, my stomach churning with sickening horror.
Marcus hadn't just broken my arm out of drunken rage. He was systematically escalating his violence to murder me—making it look like a domestic accident—so he could pay off his debt to a ruthless mobster.
"Sokolov learned yesterday that Marcus was arrested and that you are under my protection," Vincent explained, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "He believes I am interfering in his business transaction."
I looked up at Vincent, my eyes filled with terror. "Is... is he coming here?"
May you like
Vincent reached out, taking my hand into his, his grip solid as iron, his dark eyes burning with unshakeable resolve.
"Let him try," Vincent declared softly. "I built this empire to protect what is mine. And no one touches you, Lena. No one."
