Front-page headlines dominated national news outlets: “Chief of ER Exposes Doctor Husband: From Delivery Room Cruelty to Federal Drug Ring.”

Within forty-eight hours of his arrest, Cameron’s medical license was permanently revoked by the State Board. His assets were frozen by federal auditors, and the bank initiated foreclosure proceedings on his private luxury condo.

Sophie, facing twenty years in federal prison, took a plea bargain—providing complete testimony against Cameron in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Two months after the boardroom hearing, I sat in the family court of Los Angeles County for the final custody and divorce proceedings.

Cameron sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hair unkempt, his face hollowed out, his hands chained to his waist.

The family court judge, Judge Eleanor Ross, looked down at the case file with undisguised disgust.

“Dr. Bennett,” Judge Ross stated firmly. “In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such profound spousal betrayal and medical endangerment. You used your position as a physician to inflict unspeakable cruelty on the woman carrying your child.”

Judge Ross slammed her heavy wooden gavel down.

“The marriage between Amelia Grant and Cameron Bennett is hereby dissolved. Amelia Grant is awarded sole legal and physical custody of Leo Grant. A permanent, absolute protective order is issued barring Cameron Bennett from ever making contact with Leo Grant or entering within two thousand feet of Amelia Grant.”

I stood up, adjusted my blazer, picked up my handbag, and walked out of the courtroom without looking back once.
