SCALPEL OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Code Blue“Flatline! We have a Code Blue!”

The scream of the cardiac nurse cut through the sudden chaos like a razor.

Cameron stood paralyzed, staring at his blood-soaked gloves. The cold arrogance that had masked his features for hours shattered instantly. He looked at the flatline monitor, then down at my pale, lifeless face, his mouth opening and closing without producing a sound.

“Dr. Bennett! She’s in massive postpartum hemorrhage! Uterine rupture!” Nurse Sarah shouted, shoving him out of the way. “Call the trauma team! Move!”

Sophie stepped back toward the wall, her hands covering her mouth, but her eyes weren't filled with grief—they were filled with sheer, calculated panic. “Cameron... I... I didn't know she was really bleeding...”

“Get out!” Nurse Sarah barked at Sophie, charging toward the crash cart. “Get the hell out of this delivery room!”

While Cameron stood frozen in absolute horror, the doors of the operating room were kicked wide open.

“Get out of my way!” a commanding voice roared through the room.

It was Dr. Marcus Sterling—Chief of Trauma Surgery and my closest colleague from the ER. He surged into the room, flanked by an emergency surgical team. He took one look at the blood pooling under the bed, looked at Cameron, and his face turned to pure stone.

“You son of a bitch,” Marcus growled, shoving Cameron violently against the instrument tray, sending surgical tools clattering onto the floor. “You forced a ten-pound delivery on a ruptured uterus?!”

“Marcus... I... I thought she was exaggerating...” Cameron stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak.

“Get him out of here before I kill him!” Marcus roared to the security guard at the door. “Prep for an emergency crash laparotomy! We’re losing her!”

Two heavy security guards grabbed Cameron by his green scrubs, dragging him backward out of the operating room. As the doors slammed shut in his face, the last thing Cameron saw was Marcus slamming a defibrillator paddle onto my chest.

Outside in the hallway, the wail of the flatline alarm echoed through the doors.

Cameron sank onto the cold tile floor, staring at his hands—hands covered in his wife’s blood. The weight of what he had done began to crush his chest like a ton of lead.

Beside him, Sophie pulled out her phone, frantically texting someone: “It went wrong. She’s dying. Delete the hallway security footage now.”

Inside the room, Marcus charged the paddles to 200 Joules.

“Clear!”

My body jolted off the table.

“No rhythm! Charge to 300!” Marcus screamed, tears of desperation welling in his eyes. “Come on, Amelia! Don't you dare die on me! Fight!”
