Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the PastFor forty-eight hours, I existed in a dark, silent void.

While I lay in a medically induced coma inside the Intensive Care Unit, the hospital was engulfed in a quiet, deadly storm.
Cameron had been officially suspended from clinical duties pending a board investigation, but he refused to leave the hospital lobby. He sat on a vinyl bench, unshaven, his eyes bloodshot and hollow, clutching our newborn son’s medical chart.
Across town, Marcus Sterling was not sleeping.
Instead of resting after saving my life during a six-hour emergency surgery, Marcus spent the night inside my private office at the ER. He unlocked my personal laptop using the emergency security codes I had given him months prior.
On my desktop lay an encrypted file folder titled: “St. Jude Hospital Audit - Department of Obstetrics.”
Marcus opened the files. His breath hitched.
For six months before I went into labor, I had been quietly investigating a massive financial discrepancy in the hospital’s drug procurement logs. Over four hundred thousand dollars worth of high-grade synthetic opioids and specialized surgical anesthetics had vanished from the pharmacy inventory.
The authorized signatures on those stolen requisitions belonged to two people: Dr. Cameron Bennett and Intern Sophie Reed.
“You bastards,” Marcus whispered, scrolling through the paper trail.
Sophie hadn't just seduced Cameron to climb the hospital hierarchy. She and Cameron were using his position as Vice Chair of Surgery to divert pharmaceuticals to an offshore distribution ring.
My forced labor wasn't just a result of Cameron's arrogance. Sophie had intentionally provoked the incident in the delivery room because she knew I had scheduled a meeting with the hospital board’s ethics committee the very next day.
They needed me silenced. They needed me incapacitated or dead so they could blame the missing inventory on an "unstable, grieving physician."
Marcus plugged a secure flash drive into the laptop, copying every single ledger, email thread, and security timestamp.
Just as the transfer completed, the door to my ER office creaked open.
Sophie stood in the doorway, wearing a sleek black dress, holding a leather handbag. She looked surprised to see Marcus sitting in my chair.
“Dr. Sterling?” Sophie said, her voice instantly dropping into her practiced, innocent pitch. “I... I was just looking for Dr. Grant’s personal belongings to give to Cameron.”
May you like
Marcus closed the laptop slowly, looking up at her with an expression of icy contempt.
“The only thing you're giving Cameron,” Marcus stated, his voice quiet as a razor, “is a shared cell in a federal penitentiary.”
