Chapter 7 - Beneath the ArmorElaine stepped into the warm entryway, shaking the rain off her umbrella and setting her boots by the door.

Lily poked her head out from the kitchen, holding a pink crayon. “Daddy, who is it?”
“It’s Elaine from work, Lily,” Mark said. “She’s going to help me with some papers.”
Lily’s eyes lit up. “The lady who wore Mommy’s shirt!”
Elaine stopped in her tracks, a soft flush rising on her cheeks, but she smiled down at the little girl. “Hi, Lily. Do you mind if I borrow your dad for a little bit?”
“Only if he finishes making the macaroni first,” Lily bargained solemnly.
Mark chuckled, leading Elaine to the dining table. For the next two hours, the kitchen transformed into a command center. Spread across the wooden table were spreadsheets, transaction logs, and internal email printouts.
As they worked side by side, Mark was blown away by Elaine’s intellect. She picked apart Julian Vance’s false allegations with terrifying speed, highlighting discrepancies in Vance’s own departmental audits that proved he had been embezzling funds to cover up losses on his own failed accounts.
“He didn't just target me because he was drunk,” Elaine realized, staring at a cross-referenced spreadsheet Mark had just calculated. “He wanted me compromised so I wouldn't look too closely at his Q2 audit!”
“He was setting a trap,” Mark agreed, leaning back in his chair, his forearm resting near hers on the table. “And when I stepped in, I ruined his distraction.”
Elaine looked at Mark, her face mere inches from his in the warm light of the kitchen lamp. “You saved me twice, Mark. First from him, and now from losing everything I built.”

Mark looked into her eyes, seeing past the high-powered executive to the woman who was simply trying to survive in a ruthless corporate world. “You don't have to face these things alone, Elaine. You have people who care about your work. Who care about you.”
Elaine’s breath hitched slightly. Her gaze dropped to his lips before rising back to his eyes. The air between them grew charged, heavy with an undeniable attraction that had been building for months beneath the surface of professional duty.
