Chapter 6 - The Unexpected GuestThree weeks passed.

The initial workplace gossip regarding Friday night eventually faded as new quarter-end deadlines overwhelmed the department. Mark kept his head down, consistently producing flawless financial reports, while Elaine continued to lead the division with her trademark efficiency.
However, things had subtly shifted.
When Elaine walked past Mark’s cubicle, her eyes would linger a second longer. When Mark presented data in morning strategy sessions, Elaine listened with an intensity that made the rest of the board take notice. They no longer spoke of that Saturday morning, but the shared secret remained an unspoken anchor between them.
On a rainy Thursday evening, Mark was standing in his kitchen, trying to cook dinner while helping Lily with her third-grade math homework. The rain was drumming heavily against the windowpane, filling the room with a cold, rhythmic sound.
Suddenly, the front doorbell rang.
Mark frowned, setting his wooden spoon down. It was nearly 7:30 PM. He walked to the front door, unlocked it, and pulled it open.
Standing on his porch under a black umbrella was Elaine Prescott.
She wasn't in her work clothes. She wore a simple beige sweater, dark jeans, and leather boots, holding a thick leather bound portfolio under her arm. Raindrops glistened on her blonde hair.
“Elaine?” Mark said, startled. “Is everything okay at the office?”
“I’m sorry to drop by unannounced,” she said, her voice tight against the cold wind. “Julian Vance just submitted an official complaint to HR accusing me of financial bias toward your team regarding the Westridge account. He’s trying to claim our interaction at the party was an inappropriate personal relationship.”
Mark felt a sudden, sharp coldness in his chest. “He’s retaliating because I stopped him on the balcony.”
May you like
“Exactly,” Elaine said, her jaw set in anger. “He’s using corporate politics to destroy both of our reputations. I have the audit files here, but I needed to review them with you before the emergency board meeting tomorrow morning.”
Mark didn't hesitate. He pulled the door open wider. “Come inside.”
