SAFE HARBOR / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Night Everything ShiftedThe events of the previous evening played back through Mark’s mind like a chaotic film strip.

It had started with the annual department celebration at The Loft, a high-end rooftop lounge downtown. Mark had only planned to stay for forty-five minutes—just long enough to congratulate his team on closing the Westridge account and show his face before rushing off to Lily’s dance recital.

When he arrived at the lounge, the room was packed with executives, music blaring, and drinks flowing freely. In the center of it all was Elaine Prescott. But she wasn't her usual composure personified.

As the night wore on, Mark watched from the bar as a aggressive senior partner from a rival firm, Julian Vance, cornered Elaine near the private balcony. Vance was notorious for his arrogance and loud demeanor. He had been pushing Elaine into a corner, his hand resting heavily on her shoulder, ignoring her polite attempts to step away.

Mark had kept his distance until he saw Elaine’s hand shake as she tried to pull her wrist back from Vance’s grip. Her face had gone dead pale.

That was when Mark stepped in.

“Julian,” Mark had said, stepping firmly between Vance and Elaine, his posture rigid and commanding. “We need Elaine in the main lounge for the regional director’s toast. Now.”

Vance had sneered, his breath smelling heavily of scotch. “Mind your business, Wilson. We’re discussing private business.”

“The toast is mandatory,” Mark repeated, his voice cold and unwavering, placing himself directly in Vance’s path until the older man cursed under his breath and walked away toward the bar.

When Mark turned back to Elaine, he realized she wasn't just uncomfortable—she was deeply intoxicated and trembling. She had been carrying a quiet, crushing weight all evening, drinking quietly to numb whatever personal crisis she was running from.

“I can’t drive, Mark,” she had whispered, clinging to his forearm with a grip that betrayed her terror. “Please. Don't leave me here with them.”

Mark had looked at his watch. Lily’s recital was in thirty minutes. He made a split-second decision: he called his trusted neighbor, Mrs. Patel, to take Lily to the recital venue while he personally escorted Elaine out the private back exit away from predatory colleagues.

He had sacrificed his spotless attendance record at his daughter's event to protect a woman who barely knew his first name outside of a progress report.
