Chapter 10 - A New BeginningOne year later.
The summer sun streamed through the wide windows of a beautiful new home overlooking the valley. The scent of fresh flowers and grilled chicken filled the backyard patio.
Mark stood near the kitchen island, adjusting the collar of a light linen shirt. His new role as Senior Strategy Manager had flourished, giving him not only financial security but the flexibility to be present for every single one of Lily’s milestones.
From the hallway, footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor.
Elaine walked into the kitchen, wearing a simple yellow summer dress that caught the morning light. Her hair was down in soft waves, her face relaxed, happy, and entirely devoid of the cold corporate armor she once wore. She looked radiant.
Lily ran into the room right behind her, wearing a small apron and holding a plastic spatula. “Elaine! The pancakes are ready for the fruit toppings!”
“I’m right behind you, chef,” Elaine laughed, bending down to give Lily a warm hug before stepping up to Mark.
Mark wrapped his arms around Elaine’s waist, pulling her close against his chest. He looked into her bright blue eyes, seeing the vibrant, loving future they had built together out of a single night of chaos and truth.
“What are you thinking about?” Elaine asked softly, resting her hand on his cheek.
“I was just thinking about that morning,” Mark smiled, leaning down to kiss her lips gently. “The morning you woke up in my kitchen, wearing Sarah’s shirt, and asked me that crazy question.”
Elaine blushed slightly, burying her face against his neck with a soft chuckle. “I was terrified.”
“I know,” Mark whispered, holding her tight as Lily cheered from the breakfast table. “But it was the best question anyone ever asked me.”
