ROADSIDE PROMISES / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - Standing at the Prayer RailMason didn’t hesitate. He leapt into his Chevy pickup, slammed the truck into gear, and roared out of the driveway after Sterling’s vehicle. Isabella jumped into the passenger seat, holding onto the dashboard as the truck tore up Route 9 under a fresh downpour.

The high-speed chase cut through the winding mountain roads. Sterling drove recklessly, trying to lose them along the steep cliffs near the prayer rail.

“He’s going to crash!” Isabella yelled as Sterling’s sedan swerved wildly on the wet asphalt.

Sterling lost control near the mountain ridge, his car fishtailing and slamming hard into the heavy steel guardrail—the prayer rail—hanging dangerously over the steep embankment.

Mason slammed on his brakes, bringing his truck to a skidding stop feet from the edge. Smoke poured from Sterling’s ruined car.

Mason sprinted through the rain, ripping open the driver's side door. Sterling was dazed and bleeding, clutching the stolen document in his hand. Mason pulled him safely out of the smoking car onto the solid road just before the sedan shifted forward over the ledge.

Sterling collapsed on the asphalt, coughing, terrified, and completely broken. He looked up at Mason, who stood over him in the rain, breathing heavily, holding out his hand for the paper.

Sterling handed the deed over without a word.
