Chapter 6 - The Salute That Shattered a HouseThe precision and thunder of the military convoy had immediate consequences inside the main house. The front door burst open with such force it slammed against the brick exterior wall.

My mother stumbled out onto the porch, clutching her floral bathrobe tightly around her neck, her hair a wild bird's nest of rollers and loose strands. Right behind her came Emily, frantically clutching her tiny designer dog to her chest like a shield, wearing her pink silk pajamas and fluffy slippers. Brad pushed past them, his face pale, adjusting his bathrobe with trembling fingers while holding yesterday’s newspaper. My father stepped out last, peering over his reading glasses with a look of stunned disbelief.
Their eyes darted frantically from the three matte-black military vehicles idling in the driveway, to the armed operators standing guard, to Colonel Vance standing at strict attention in front of the garage.
And then, their gaze dropped to me.
They saw me sitting on the old canvas folding cot in the freezing garage, wearing an oversized hoodie, with Michael’s dog tags glinting in the morning light.
My mother’s jaw dropped so low I thought it might dislocate. Emily let out a sharp, breathless gasp, stepping backward against the porch railing. Brad’s face drained of all color, his eyes bulging as he stared at the gold insignia on Colonel Vance’s uniform.

"What... what is the meaning of this?" my father stammered, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic panic. "Who are these people? Sarah, what have you done?"
Colonel Vance did not even deign to look at my father. He kept his eyes fixed entirely on me, treating my family with the absolute, freezing contempt they deserved.
