Chapter 1 - The Freezing ConcreteThe air in the garage tasted of stale gasoline, damp cardboard, and biting frost. It was 5:12 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, and my breath plumed in the dim light like smoke from a dying fire. Seven months pregnant, I sat on an old canvas folding cot that sagged uncomfortably in the middle, pressing against my aching lower back. My fingers were stiff, wrapped tightly around the cold ceramic mug of coffee that had long since lost its warmth.

Just hours earlier, I had been sleeping in the upstairs guest bedroom—a room I had painted myself, filling it with soft pastels and gentle sunlight for the baby I was carrying. But my sister Emily and her husband Brad had arrived late the previous night with their designer dog and an air of absolute entitlement. Without a single word of discussion, my parents had ordered me out. "Mom and Dad need the upstairs bedrooms," Emily’s text had read. "Move your stuff into the garage tonight. Brad needs a private workspace while he’s staying here."
I looked down at the oversized military sweatshirt I wore, a garment that still smelled faintly of woodsmoke and laundry detergent from when my husband, Michael, had worn it. Michael had been a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, a man who had dedicated his entire adult life to protecting others—including my ungrateful family. He had bought this house for my parents after they faced foreclosure. He had paid for their medical procedures. He had even funded Emily’s entire law school education. And yet, nine months after his helicopter went down in a catastrophic communication failure overseas, my family looked at me not as a grieving widow carrying their grandchild, but as an inconvenient piece of furniture blocking their path.
A sharp kick against my ribs brought me back to the present. I instinctively placed my hand over my swollen belly, whispering softly into the cold air. "Don't worry, little one," I murmured. "We aren't going to be here long. Your father left us a legacy, and they are about to learn what happens when you awaken a sleeping giant."
