Chapter 5 - Dawn of the Black SUVsAt exactly 7:58 a.m., the ground beneath the garage floor began to vibrate. It wasn't the subtle rumble of a passing commuter car or the familiar purr of Brad’s Mercedes. It was the heavy, rhythmic thrum of high-displacement diesel engines and reinforced tactical suspension systems.

I walked over to the heavy metal garage door, gripping the manual latch, and pulled it upward with a loud metallic rattle. Morning sunlight flooded the space, reflecting off the pristine, frost-covered driveway.
Three matte-black military SUVs rolled in slow, synchronized precision through the front gates, coming to a dead stop in a tactical formation that blocked both exits of the driveway. The doors opened simultaneously. Four elite operators from Michael’s former special operations unit stepped out, securing the perimeter with professional, swift movements.
Following them came Colonel Thomas Vance, a towering, decorated officer whose chest was heavy with medals and whose face bore the weathered lines of decades of service. He had known Michael well. He had attended our wedding.

Colonel Vance marched straight toward the open garage door, his boots crunching on the gravel. As he reached the threshold, he stopped, straightened his posture, and snapped a sharp, flawless military salute.
"Mrs. Carter," Colonel Vance said, his voice ringing with absolute authority and deep respect. "Authorization was approved at 0600 hours. We are here to escort you home."
