Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO DISAPPEARED|

Edward Bennett agreed to meet Clara at a small restaurant outside Philadelphia.
He arrived fifteen minutes early.
He was sixty-one, with gray hair, tired eyes, and a thin scar running from his left temple toward his ear.
When he saw Clara, he stood.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then he said her name.
"Clara."
She remained beside the table.
"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"
Edward lowered his eyes.
"I thought it was the only way to keep you safe."
"From whom?"
"The Marchettis."
She sat down slowly.
Edward explained that he had worked as a financial auditor for Bellara's original investors. Years earlier, he discovered that millions of dollars were being diverted through shell companies connected to several powerful families.
He and Clara's mother had attempted to expose the operation.
Instead, they became targets.
Her mother hid the original ledger.
Edward disappeared.
He believed that separating himself from Clara would prevent anyone from using her as leverage.
"You left me with no father," Clara said.
"I know."
"You let me grow up believing nobody wanted me."
Edward looked devastated.
"I wanted you every single day."
"Then why didn't you come back?"
"Because every time I tried, someone was watching."
Clara looked away.
She wanted to be angry.
She was angry.
But beneath it was a sadness she had carried for years without understanding its source.
Edward placed a photograph on the table.
It showed him standing beside a younger man.
Aurelio's father.
Clara recognized him from the old family portraits.
"Your mother and I worked with him," Edward said. "Before the Marchetti family became what it is today."
"Was Aurelio's father involved in the fraud?"
"No. He wanted to stop it."
"Then who did?"
Edward looked toward the restaurant entrance.
"Anselmo."
Clara's stomach tightened.
Aurelio's uncle.
The old man who had watched her stand without a seat at the engagement dinner.
"He took control after Aurelio's father died. He used the family business to move money through Bellara. When we discovered the truth, he arranged for the original investors to disappear."
"Why didn't you go to the police?"
"We did. The evidence disappeared. Two witnesses were killed. Your mother received threats."
Edward opened another envelope.
Inside was a list of account numbers and a handwritten map.
"The ledger is hidden inside a storage facility in New Jersey. Your mother left instructions. I never had the courage to retrieve it."
Clara studied the map.
"Why now?"
"Because you became engaged to Aurelio."
He reached across the table.
"Your mother loved him once."
Clara stared.
"What?"
"Not romantically. She knew him as a child. She believed he might grow up to be different from the rest of his family."
Edward's expression darkened.
"But his uncle has been grooming him to inherit the entire operation since he was a boy."
Clara remembered the recording.
Aurelio's voice.
She has a clean record.
If the transfer goes wrong, the documents will lead straight to her.
She pulled her hand away.
"Then Aurelio knew exactly who I was."
Edward nodded.
"Your mother kept photographs of you and him in the same room when you were children. She suspected the families would eventually cross paths again."
Clara felt dizzy.
"Are you saying he knew about my family before he proposed?"
"I don't know."
Edward slid the map toward her.
"But I know where the ledger is."
Clara picked it up.
Before they could leave, her phone rang.
Margaret.
Clara answered.
"What's wrong?"
Margaret's voice was urgent.
"Don't go anywhere with your father."
Clara frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I just received a court document identifying Edward Bennett as a suspect in the original Bellara disappearance."
She looked at her father.
He was already standing.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Anselmo found us."
