Chapter 19 - THE LAST SECRET OF THE MARCHETTI FAMILY|

Clara met Aurelio in the courthouse parking garage.
He was waiting beside his car, without security, without his usual entourage.
For the first time, he looked like an ordinary man.
She stopped several feet away.
"Tell me about the photograph."
Aurelio held out his phone.
"Sofia had discovered that my father's death wasn't an accident."
Clara studied the image.
"Anselmo killed him?"
"We believe so. But there was another person involved."
"Who?"
Aurelio looked at her.
"My mother."
Clara's expression changed.
"Why?"
"She knew Anselmo was planning to take control of the company. She helped him arrange the meeting that led to my father's death."
"Why would she do that?"
"She believed Anselmo would leave her children alone if she cooperated."
Aurelio explained that Sofia had discovered evidence connecting Isabella to the original murder investigation.
When Aurelio met Sofia, she offered him a choice.
Help expose the family or become the next person Anselmo controlled.
He had agreed to help.
But he hadn't known how far the investigation would go.
"What does this have to do with me?"
Aurelio looked down.
"Sofia discovered your mother's connection to Bellara. She also discovered that your identity could legally restore control of the company."
"So you approached me."
"Yes."
Clara waited.
"At first, I wanted to find out whether you knew anything. Then I started spending time with you."
"And fell in love?"
He looked at her.
"Yes."
"At what point did you decide I was worth more as a fiancée than as a person?"
Aurelio didn't answer.
She continued.
"You could have told me everything. You could have warned me. Instead, you let me walk into that dinner and stand there while your ex took my seat."
"I know."
"Why did you do it?"
"Anselmo was watching. If I treated you like the person I loved, he would have understood that you were important to me."
Clara's eyes filled.
"So you humiliated me to protect me?"
"I thought I could keep him from suspecting you."
"Did you ever consider asking what I wanted?"
Aurelio looked away.
"No."
She shook her head.
"That's the problem with you. You think protection means making every decision yourself."
"I know."
"And you think an apology will make everything disappear."
"It won't."
He reached into his coat and removed a small box.
Clara stiffened.
"Don't."
"It's not a ring."
He opened it.
Inside was a key.
"What is that?"
"The key to my private archive. It contains every document I have about Bellara, my family, and the transactions involving your name."
"Why give it to me?"
"Because you deserve to know everything. Even the things that destroy me."
She took the key.
"Have you given the investigators the full records?"
"Yes."
"Will you testify?"
"Yes."
"Will you give up the company?"
"If that's what the court requires."
Clara looked at him.
For the first time, he wasn't asking her to trust him.
He was offering her the truth and accepting the consequences.
But she wasn't ready to forgive him.
"Thank you for the key."
Aurelio nodded.
"That's all I can ask."
She turned to leave.
Then he spoke.
"Clara."
She stopped.
"I loved you before I knew who you were."
She looked back.
"Maybe. But you didn't respect me enough to let me choose whether to love you."
She walked away.
Three months later, the Bellara investigation reached its final stage.
Anselmo was charged with financial crimes, conspiracy, and involvement in the murder of Aurelio's father.
Valentina's father agreed to cooperate.
Isabella was placed under investigation.
Matteo testified against the family.
Edward's role in the original cover-up was also examined.
Clara's name was cleared of the fraudulent transfers.
She became the legal representative of the restored Bellara trust.
And Aurelio?
He disappeared from the headlines.
Until the morning Clara received a letter delivered by hand.
Inside was a photograph of the old rooftop where he had proposed.
On the back, he had written:
I won't ask you to come back. But if you ever want to know who I am without the Marchetti name, I'll be waiting.
Clara folded the photograph.
Then she looked at the calendar.
May you like
The wedding date was still marked in red.
It was time to decide what came next.
